It took quite a long time for me to figure this one out and I'm still not sure if I am correct. Searches in the Sonar forum on "Fantom VS" did not yield very many results.

I have installed Sonar X3 and I'm now testing out all of my plug-ins to make sure everything is working well.

Under my Instrument VST plug-ins tab it lists a soft synth called Fantom VS.
I can not get this plug-in to work and it freezes my Sonar program every time I try.

After a few hours of research I think I've discovered the problem but I'm not really sure.

I think that the Fantom VS plug-in is only available for use if you have Cakewalk's hardware  product V Studio 700. I think the Fantom VS plug-in is a tool specific to Cakewalk's V Studio 700 hardware product and it is not a soft synth that can be used on its own without the V Studio 700 connected?

Can anyone confirm this for me?

Thanks,
Pete

Yes, that's correct. The Fantom VS plug-in is only for V-Studio 700 users.

Thanks Scott. I spent a few hours this morning trying to get what I thought was a soft synth to work before coming to that conclusion.

It's odd that it would download into my VST folder by default.

BTW: Although I purchased and installed Sonar X1 and X3 I've been using version 8 because I didn't want to waste time learning the new user interface. After purchasing a new DAW with Windows 8.1 installed I am now forced to use X3. It would have been impossible for me to know how to navigate through all the new menus etc. without the use of your Sonar Power book and it has been a huge help to me. I now have 5 of your books.

Hi Peter,

I'm not sure why it got installed. I don't think it's checked by default in the SONAR installation, but you can use the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager to hide it so SONAR won't list it.

Thanks very much for reading my books! I appreciate the support. I'm glad to hear they've been helpful too.

I'll be listing some new material on my site sometime soon: http://www.garrigus.com/
