Running what?  I always use ASIO for interfaces unless it will not run in ASIO on older interfaces.

This is not always the case although trying driver modes can help with some issues.

If you are running Windows10 and have a crappy interface... perhaps (MS did a bunch of tweaks to their audio drivers). They are claiming it MAY be able to even compete with ASIO but IDK.
 
If you are running ASIO4ALL with not proper interface... again you may get better results.
 
But for now... ASIO is, and always has been since it's creation, the superior driver mode when a proper ASIO interface (and it's drivers) are installed.
 
However for those forced to use alternate modes due to a lack of proper ASIO drivers... try to use WDM (or WASAPI) and then KS (Kernal Stream). Those are the ones that will provide lower latency/better quality.
 
MME will cause ridiculous latency and is ancient.
 
I am not a tech. This is just a bunch of crap I've learned. Could be wrong but most source seem to concur.

My octacapture works much better with wdm driver. The Asio one hates multiple instances of kontakt. Definitely not an issue across the board but for me, for whatever reason it's a guaranteed crash on project startup. Not even DAW specific.

I've had a number of recording interfaces over the years and it's a simple fact that some had better ASIO drivers and some had better WDM drivers.  It's a matter of testing each and seeing which performs better on your system.  Making the blanket statement that ASIO is always better is not necessarily always correct.  I guess one of the advantage of ASIO in Sonar is not having to run the wave profiler every time you tweak your interface's buffer size.
 
The thing interesting to me was the great hope of WaveRT and all of the spectacular hype around it, yet it proved to be useless.

FWIW I've tried both ASIO and WDM with several interfaces, and agree that the definitive answer is..."it depends," although I've generally had better results with ASIO. One big difference between the two is that WDM can aggregate interfaces, just like Core Audio on the Mac. ASIO doesn't do that inherently, although there are some exceptions.
 
Windows 10 has improved the audio stack, but it's still not at ASIO performance levels. However the plan is to get there before too terribly long.

While it's true that it's possible sometimes to aggregate devices in WDM/KS driver mode, unless you have a way to then synchronise those devices there's not much point as it creates more problems than it solves.

I agree with opinions that wsystko depends on the audio interfacu. I have a Mackie Onyx Blackbird and after tests found that it works best with WDM. When a session has several tracks I have no problem with ASIO. When I work for 30-40 tracks starting at the CPU sudden sharp increase in, drops and crackles. It does not help even increase latency. I tested this for a long time. Only change Drive Mode WDM / KS improved stability of the session.

On your setup.  It's been my observation that more people find ASIO to be the better driver.   As general advice, best to just try them all and see which is better.
