I've got two options...update or install  ...what's the difference?

Often when I call Cakewalk they say that they are a small company and so its hard to take care of everything.  But this is an example of bringing it on themselves...two sentences explaining the difference between install and update...(not to mention, why cant the definitions of red yellow and green be right on the command center?).

update downloads a new version from the Cakewalk server, install actually installs the downloaded version replacing the currently installed one on your PC.

Really if you can't figure these things out how on earth are you going to manage using a DAW and all that complexity.

The idea that update means download is nowhere near obvious to me mudge. Did you take your grumpy pills this morning?

Uh oh. I'm in trouble too. I saw the title of the thread and came here to read an answer.  I sure hope I can still use a DAW. ;)

If update is a download, why is it not called a download? The term Update makes one think it updates the current version, ie. installs the update. "Install" might  make one think it installs something that does not exist in the computer yet, an upgrade or a new VST. It sure is not too much asked to label those functions in an unambiguous way.

Ya I should say on reflection that I'm not absolutely sure it's completely accurate - based on observation only and to be honest I haven't watched the behavior closely enough to be certain there's not more to it than I outlined above. Maybe Cakewalk will clarify.

I've only got one item which is not up to date. It shows Reinstall and Update buttons. From this and the other combinations I see, my understanding is this:
 
Install = Download the currently not installed item and install it.
Reinstall = Install again the same version as the currently installed item.
Update = Download the newer version of a currently installed item and install it.
 
I'm not seeing a combination of Install and Update for an item at the same time, only Reinstall and Update. Are item(s) showing both Install and Update?

Thanks Adrian...I will try this theory.  It's sounds pretty good.

This brings up an interesting point...the "everyone knows this" assumption, because how Adrian defines these terms is how software companies have defined these terms for years. But- what if you haven't been installing software for years?
 
It's like using a floppy disk icon for the "save" button...how much longer before people won't have the slightest idea what that icon stands for?
