another question...

if i buy a new machine that will run the latest version of sonar, (which my old one won't)  will i be able to transfer my files (written in sonar 6 on windows XP) to the new machine running windows 7?   and what would be the best way to transfer them?  memory stick?  DVD?  network cable?

appreciate your help

I'm pretty sure that Sonar 6 was ready for Vista, which means it will work with Windows 7 as well. Otherwise, it will work fine if you turn User Account Control (UAC) to the lowest setting in Windows 7 (which is the same as turning it off).

As far as transferring your projects, any of the methods you described are fine. Also, you can just use an external hard drive.

I have just checked the Sonar 6PE manual and there is no mention of Vista, only XP.

I ran Sonar 6 in Windows 7 with no problems.  I didn't run it that way for very long, as I upgraded to 8 shortly thereafter, so I didn't get to try everything, but it did work.

Sonar 6 will be run on the windows 7. If you get the problem then then first of all uninstall it and then again try to install. I think it will solve your problem otherwise visit these site. social dot answers dot microsoft dot com > Forums >en US>w7music > thread >26e61cbc-3a7a-4e23-9f9f-37bec129f53c.

I am having trouble installing sonar producer 6 in windows 7 64 bit; it's not seeing my plugins (certainly not old ones) and I'm not getting midi playback - did you install it on top of previous cakewalk programs - I did so over homestudio; alternatively do you know if I can run sonar at 32 bit if it's a 64 bit machine?  It's all so complicated!  Any help appreciated.

I use 32 and 64 both every day with no problems. I use 32 for some of those older VST and Directx plugs that don't translate well over BitBridge. You can see my computer setup in my signature below.
