ok so the fw light has lit on the interface from the 2nd firewire port that was already on the computer that I just seen for the first time today. so I'll test this out. I'm also going to test out the firewire card i just bought.

you SHOULD see the Saffire listed in device manager under sound devices if all is well.

no i do not have an internal firewire device. i think I had more than one TI slot on here. I'll try that one. I am trying to install the one that I have. if this one does not work I'll try to get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815166018

by the way the information is in the user manual. I bought the chipset off ebay but only because this computer tech told me not to waste 70 bucks on a chipset. Plus the chipset must be compatible with windows 7 64 bit which this chipset is.

How do I remove these bracket fillers. I don't wanna break anything. there are no screws in them.
you shouldn't have to spend $70 on a firewire card, but with all due respect, the computer tech doesn't have a clue about music production and personally I have bought cheap firewire cards before - even ones with TI chipsets and they don't work right.  what good is it to spend $15 on a firewire card if it doesn't work?  then you have to spend more on one that does.  the one I bought that ended up working well with my MOTU was $40 plus shipping - ended up being $48 delivered.

to remove those "blockers" on the back with no screws, just pop them out.  they are attached by a metal tack to the frame, just break that and push it out.
EDIT:  the firewire card I linked to won't necessarily work for you since it looks like you're looknig for a PCIe card.  I tried a PCIe card and couldn't get it to work, but it was a combo 1394A/1394B card, so that's what Scott told me to ditch and get a 1394A only card and I got a PCI card instead of the PCIe.

I wouldn't go that far into saying that this computer tech doesn't know about music production because he actually has guitars and stuff hooked up to computers in the store. And for that card you have. It says the chipset is a TSB43AB23. That is the same chipset in mines except that it looks different. I still haven't tried it but my other firewire port is working fine for now. I haven't gotten a chance to hear any playback from recording in sonar yet but I have a focusrite tech helping me with that.

Also your card doesn't say anything about supporting windows 7 64 bit.
This card is a PCI card as well.

I also see that now. And I can see the meter moving in the mixcontrol software as well when playing on my drum machine. just having problems hearing playback after recording. It's like muted out and I followed the intstructions the lady told me on the phone.

No I was actually looking for a PCI card. Which I do have. But most of the ones I looked at that might work are up in price. I can't buy one if it does not support windows 7 64 bit. I have two express and regular PCI slots open. I think I'm going to stick with the firewire ports I have today and wait for problems to come in and then change out.

ok so your not hearing the playback THROUGH SONAR???

make sure the routing in the mix control is daw 1 and daw 2 to the line outputs you have your monitor speaker system hooked up to , then make sure the output of the track you are playing is assigned to the  same Saffires audio outputs as your monitor

can you plug headphones into the saffire and hear output?

The tech just told me to change my master to 1/2 now I'm hearing everything and there's no clipping anymore yay!!!

I should finally be able to record something in about 5 months of heartache. Is the end of that or what?

Well tune in for my next thread.

it's so amazing how things get fixed when all of the pertinent information is presented, eh, MM?

EDIT: for anyone reading this - the firewire card I linked to does have win7x64 support.  that's what I'm running it on.
