I've never used the S/PDIF interfaces on any of my devices - which probably means I haven't needed them - but I'm curious...

Besides sending/receiving audio info to and from your daw, how have you used S/PDIF in your setup? Maybe there's sone cool tricks or uses I'm missing!

Hi Gavin-

I've only used S/PDIF as an input. I have a Native Instruments KA6 with S/PDIF connections and I can route my MOTIF S/PDIF out to it and keep the 2 analog XLR inputs and 2 TRS inputs free.

Other than routing to an external digital effects box without conversion, or the standard I/O from a CD or DAT player etc., there is nothing special or extraordinarily useful about SPDIF.

I use S/PDIF to record one of my two outboard ROMplers, in order to bypass its noisy analog section. My other ROMpler is quiet enough that I usually don't bother with the extra hassle of having to change my clock master to S/PDIF. But that's really the (only) advantage: you're transferring the synth's internal samples directly, with no D/A conversion or amplification to add noise.

I use spdif to add two more mic inputs by using an external stereo mic preamp that has spdif outputs.

Some guitar effects processors have spdif output. I have used the spdif output of a GT-8 to record the guitar without having to convert to analog.

One time I connected the spdif output of my audio interface back to the input to make a loop back.
The purpose was to capture and record audio from the internet onto my DAW.
Send the windows audio out to spdif then select the spdif input on the DAW set to record mode. Make sure input monitor is off so you don't get a feedback loop.

I use S/PDIF for connecting a digital mixer to my daw interface, as well as one of my outboard synths.

I have my Elevenrack connected to my M-Audio projectmix via spdif. I can record my guitar with effects in stereo with spdif and a dry mono signal analog. Later I can use the dry signal for reamping via spdif if needed.

A TASCAM interface into a TC Konnekt interface for more and better preamps/converters.

I used to use an spdif with my AWE32 / sblive.. and hook that up to a mini disc and get a very clean signal when recording etc.

the timing was an issue on a few things , where 2 units in the same pc go out of sync and it used to check the pc into a wobbly IRQ blue screen the odd time
