  • Is SONAR actually an acronym?

I noticed that Cakewalk always capitalizes SONAR at all times. This often indicates an acronym. Since the creators were obviously clever beasts I was wondering if maybe there is a specific meaning behind it.

The AR at the end kind of implies "Audio Recorder" (and wasn't SONAR Cake's first move into pro audio capture after being mostly a MIDI tool?). Maybe the S is for "Studio".

So is there some cryptic meaning I'm overlooking or am I just getting my Dan Brown on?

Inquiring minds and all that...

I always figured they were "borrowing" from this:  https://en.wikipedia.org/../RADAR_(audio_recorder)

I started with CAKEWALK Pro Audio 6.0 in the 90's.

Since "Pro Audio" was in the name ... you might assume that the capture part pre-dated SONAR.

Also, since CAKEWALK was spelled with all capitals ... you might assume that CAKEWALK was an acronym.

[edit] I think it was either CAKEWALK (product name) or cakewalk (logo)

Sonar used to mean "Sound Navigation & Ranging." Basically a sonic version of RADAR.
I'm guessing that Cakewalk used that reference for their name.

Ha! Shows what I know. I hadn't considered that the original term SONAR was an acronym. I mean... I think I kind of sorta learned that at some point but there is only so much info I can cram in this little pea noodle I call a brain.

Here's an old discussion of the name...

I remember long ago Cakewalk explaining why they used all caps, but I don't remember the exact reason.  It seems that it had to do with copyrighting the name for the product.  I have noticed that product reviews and online sales often have the product listed as "Sonar" instead of the accurate "SONAR".
