Ever since we went to X2 I think maybe X3 I have latency problems.  Recording live tracks is not a problem but if I add anything to them...Compressor, reverb, amp plug-in you name it....anything then I can no longer sync when re-recording a punch-in, or complete track.
Sonar reports a latency of less than 5msec.
Which means as long as the track is dry then I have no problems.  Also means that I can never play along with anything where there are tracks with plug-in's of any kind.  Not very inspiring......

So you can see from my signature what my rig is.   Is there a different interface that might fix this problem?

Hi. Do you have a wifi card on your pc? That can in some cases produce spikes on latency.
Try running this http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon to see if anything pops up as causing extra latency.
If that does not work, I can highly recommend RME. It has very good drivers, and low latency.
Best of luck.

There's nothing wrong with the interface you're using, especially if you're getting <5ms latency. What you're describing is a SONAR/computer setup problem.

Sonar uses latency compensation to align new recording to existing recording, but latency (within SONAR) changes as you add or remove plugins.  Sonar should be tracking that.

Are there by any chance a common plugin in your projects, that could be causing your problems?

No WiFi.....and I typically keep a minimum of process running to keep all the resources for Sonar.  I have given it's main process real-time priority....

No it really does not matter which plug-ins.....The are all the stock plugins in Producer...
Again typical process is there are no plug-ins until I go to production.  I'm just recording their live sounds.  Then as the production starts and maybe add a comp to the drums, or a limiter on the bass ... just the normal kind of stuff.  Then the bass player wants to do his track over ... or maybe just fix a couple of notes.
If I add to the saved production there will be a noticeable delay with the added notes or new track.  If I go back to the original save before adding the plug-in's and do the correction of redo the track all is well...?

You probably will not like to hear this but there is quite a bit of evidence that Xeon CPU's are not best suited to music production.  Great server processors but........

Do you have the latest ASIO drivers for your AI?
Did you try latencymon, to see if there are anything that sticks out?

Definitely not the norm.  You're sure these are normal FX with no lookahead feature (that tend to add latency)?  I'm speaking of FX like convolution reverbs, linear phase dynamics like CW's LP-- fx, etc...

^^This is a good question as well.

There's a wide variety of cpu usage by various plugins.  I was totally baffled by drop outs and latency until I got rid of guitar rig on one track.  The cpu usage was off the charts on that single plugin.  Sometimes it takes some sleuthing to figure it all out.

BTW I'm really liking my TASCAM 2x2 which is on clearance at guitar center right now for $79.  Only problem is, I'm wondering if under Gibson they'll continue driver development or just drop it like tascam used to do.  (The poor schlep at GC was saying *don't buy tascam! Blah, blah blah* I'm like isn't Gibson you're biggest vendor?!  LOL)  Does anyone know?
