Any help would be much appreciated.  I'm on the verge of smashing up a lot of equipment in a fit of rage over here... !! :)

So I'm working on a track and for no reason all of a sudden Cakewalk decides that the RME 9632 outputs don't exist anymore and so no output.

I go to preferences and uncheck, check, etc, nothign works.
Ironically the "ding" sound from windows itself comes on so basically X3 has the audacity to make the ding sound through the very device it claims it can't find, in order to try to convince me that it can't find it.   Is it trying to screw with my head?

The only thing that seems to help is to restart Sonar, open the same file again after which it decides it can see those outputs again.

It makes NO SENSE and is literally driving me insane. Have wasted a good evening on this stupid issue.  Any help much appreciated plesae!

Sounds like it could be a Windows thing - the fact that you haven't shut off Windows sounds (the ding you mention) I wonder if you need to get into Control panel and look for an issue there. Turn off Windows sounds, and make sure the RME is your default Audio Device. Some people have OK luck with Sonar sharing audio devices, but I would try not doing that if I were you in this case just to see if it gets sorted out.
There are many more tweaks, as well as ensuring that you have the latest drivers.

are you using ASIO drivers in sonar? if yes there is a good chance windows has grabbed the ASIO driver and it is no longer available for Sonar to use.

Yes rabeeach I can't understand why Windows is using the Asio divers as I'm not using Windows for anything, jsut purely Sonar.

If so Brian's suggestion above should work I guess.

However it's been running aboslutely fine in the last hour or so when I randomly decided to look at the settings and found that Word Clock was set to ADAT for some reason.  I set it to "Internal" (I have a Saffire Pro 40 ADATed into the RME 9632) and since then (perhaps by luck) it seems to be stable   so far!

Well now there's a detail you probably should have mentioned right away!  : )

I'm not sure why that would disconnect your RME drivers - unless Windows shut them down for non use while getting clock from another source. Hmmmmm  . . . . . . .
Follow up if it goes wonky again!
