My midi controller is spitting out spurious pitch wheel messages.  The weird thing is that the crap coming out of my controller is effecting the playback of my recorded midi tracks.  So until I can get it fixed...
 
I typically record in Omni mode with my controller set to midi channel 1.  (I assume this must associate all the midi notes to channel 1 even though I'm in Omni mode...)  What I think I need to do is -
1) use the event editor to strip out all recorded extraneous pitch wheel messages.  (I know how to do this)
2) change the midi channel for the midi recording to anything other than 1  (not sure how to do this)
3) change the soft synth to the new channel.  (I know how to do this)
 
What's the easy way to do item 2?
 
Any ideas why crap from my controller is being routed to my soft synth even though I'm not in record mode?

One way is select the track, clip(s) or note(s) and change the channel in the Event Inspector module.

Your controller's input (including "crap") is delivered to any track that is echo-enabled* and has its input channel/port either omni or matching your controller. (*... or tracks with the record button set, but that's not your scenario).
 
"Enable echo" has two modes: "Always Echo Current MIDI Track" either set or not set. When not set, only tracks with the echo [*))] button set will echo your controller's input. When "set", whichever track is highlighted echoes your controller's input. For more explicit control of echoing, it might be easier to turn off the "Always echo ..." option (in Edit > Preferences > MIDI - Playback and Recording).
 
Alternatively, you can change the input port/channel setting for any track to a different (from your controller) port or channel so that it can't echo your controller to the track's output (assuming you are done recording). It is then unnecessary to change the midi channel of the events and the attached soft-synth.
 
 
 
 
 

I would second bvideo's "Alternate" approach.
After recording the MIDI track, change the input of that track to anything other than the port and channel of your keyboard controller. It will no longer receive the spurious messages.

Is the Event List the easiest way to change the midi channel (output) of all events on a track?  I'm not seeing a way to do multiple selection on all events and doing a global replace of the Ch column...

To change the MIDI channel try the Event Inspector NOT the Event List as described in msg #2.
