  • Win 10 - Why Leave Win 7? (p.14)

Coming from Windows 7 Pro x64. I upgraded yesterday using the MediaCreationTool. I stopped the download once when it was at 54% and had some problems getting that tool to work again, but it eventually started running again and started downloading from scratch, though.

It didn't take long to install (about 40 min or so). I didn't see any great improvement in how it runs or in bootup speed. It boots to the login screen fast, but the time it takes Windows to completely load, is about the same overall time it takes Windows 7 to boot and load.

It does take some learning to get familiar with getting around the OS. I don't like the added part to the right of the Start menu, but I guess I can live with that. I frown upon the inability to make custom choices of what to select and install for Windows updates. I don't like that! That means Microsoft is controlling what we have on are computer and I strongly suspect there is advanced spyware stuff in Windows 10 because of this!

There are reports that Windows 10 has the ability to disable the use of pirated games and software (primarily Microsoft authored games and software). That's really not a problem for me in itself, but it's an invasion of privacy (to take control of any activity conducted on an individuals PC like that), and that really troubles me.

I'm really interested in Windows 10 because of the new Audio Stack API implementations in the new OS. I'm gonna get around to seeing what kind of low latency improvements are present for WDM and WASAPI drivers. And I got to say I like Cortana (the A.I. from the Halo games), and I want to try out Cortana! :)

There is one important issue I'm having with Windows 10, now. I can't get the thing Activated. I'm getting the following error: Error code: 0xC004C003. I tried phone Activation to no avail. And I've spent a good amount of time waiting on the phone to speak with Microsoft. I also spoke via phone to Microsoft techs and reps. To this point Online and phone activation is not working for me. Microsoft says a number of people are getting this error code, and there's an issue with the Activation Servers at this time. They tell me to give it 48 hours or so and the Online Activation should work. That error code I'm getting has something to do with the server blocking my activation because of the Windows 10 product number I have. That product number on my copy of Windows 10 was automatically given by my use of the Microsoft MediaCreationTool and it's installation of Windows 10 on my PC. I'm not responsible for that Product number. I'll give it a week or so, and if Windows 10 doesn't get activated, I'll call Microsoft, again. Guess this is my price for Windows 10. As the saying goes: Nothing is really free.

Overall, though, it looks like Windows 10 may be a good OS in general and as a host for a DAW.

Whatever happened to Control panel/Programs?
Do you know if it still exists?

Go to the Start Menu> click on Settings and type in Programs and Features. The uninstall tool is in Programs and Features.

Some more info for those thinking of doing the update:

I have just spent 19 hours watching Win 10 install. Every time you think it's finally done, another stage starts.

1) There's a bunch of 3rd party (and Microsoft) software that you CANNOT UNINSTALL. Think Android phones.

2) The Windows 7 START menu is NOT back.
All that they have done is put the Win8 startpage icons in a popup above the Start button.
Instead of scrolling horizontally, you now scroll vertically.

3) Also, this stupid Internet Explorere Edge is correcting all my capitalization without asking. And it's not correct.

I shall be sticking with Windows 7 for as long as possible.

You're sensationalizing.

There is a Windows 10 start menu: A new modern version.

Granted, some apps can't be removed. Do you know how to uninstall apps?

Are the apps/applications you can't uninstall interfering with your workflow?

Microsoft Edge is a work in progress: I'll concede to that. But your specific complaint is, IMO, whiny and exaggerated.

People have a right to complain, without being called "whiny." That is defensive and arrogant.

My apologies, but it is whiny and exaggerated.

Some of the complaints I've seen are regurgitated nonsensical traps set by click beaters to "scare" those susceptible to the "herd" mentality. Uncorroborated and exaggerated information stirred up by the unprofessional tech bloggers spreads through word of mouth and shared web links to the point where peoples complaints are simply what someone else complained about.

I hate healthy food because it's inconvenient. Now you should too. Hear it enough times, you might believe it and share this "fact" with others too.

I've found Win10 to be great so far, but I haven't risked installing it on my SONAR drive just yet.

It installed no problems on top of Win7, gui is faster, booting and shut down is faster, everything responds faster.

It feels like a hybrid of Win7 and 8.

Oh, and it picked up my Roland Quad-Capture drivers and installed them in the background without me having to do the usual of unplugging the usb lead, running the installer and plugging it back in...impressive.

I am in absolutely no rush to upgrade to win10.. I fail to see any value within my current environment as to my way of thinking...

a) A new machine is the ideal time to upgrade an os..not deliberately potentially disrupt a working reliable and known system.
b) I have between 7-10 pieces of hardware that require a driver, so upgrading to a new os without user confirmed driver support would be putting me in the "dumb a as a box of rocks" category...
c) Anyone on a win7 machine is likely to be on another PC within 2-4 years, so that gives even the slowest manufacturer time to not develop a driver, get railed at by the public, and then finally kicking and screaming, release a driver (here's looking at you Roland).

everyones MMV but with hardware..compatability comes first, and its not something to experiment with

Wow, that's even more defensive! complaints about Windows 10 are all over the internet not because of some vast tech-conspiracy, but because of Microsoft's increasingly intrusive and manipulative behavior.

Two of the recent security updates were corrupt. Non-stop restarting,....

Auto-updates: This is the main reason to not upgrade yet.

Increasingly the question is WHEN this stupidity with be changed not IF.

You are absolutely correct that you need very specific information.

And I am not helping you with your need.
