When I first upgraded it seemed to be slower but after a couple of reboots it got faster somehow. . .

I'm glad I seen this, I thought I was imagining things, as that was my experience as well. At first on my 2 laptops and test machine I was wondering what everyone was going on about, because as far as I was concerned it wasn't noticeably faster at booting (or anything else) in fact I thought it to be slower. With the first of my main music PC's it wasn't as noticeable (more power I guess) but the same thing.

Now the boot time and general snappiness is obviously apparent.

That might be because the document indexing engine has finished its work.

The first few times you boot windows 10 you may notice it runs slower than usual whilst it indexes, updates, and optimizes itself.

WIN 10 FREE?
...have we learned nothing from the matrix or BSG?!! ...hmm, all people using the same OS at the same time all over the planet.
Windows 7 Pro x64 sp1 the most stable (FME) OS version.

Shenrei, I agree with you about the aero glass. While some don't see this as important, many do, including me. It may just be psychological, the artists mentality; but it is real, at least for some of us. The gorgeous landscapes in Windows, with the aero view, can really set the mood for me. But you need to have a powerful computer to run it and do music.

On that last point: not especially. Windows nowadays offloads all the desktop drawing work to the graphics hardware. So it barely impacts performance for an application like Sonar at all.

Find out for yourself, I guess peoples results may differ depending on hardware specs:

00 CPU usage with Aero on for me.  I'm assuming the above will happen if you are running integrated graphics with limited resources, and a weak system  Looking at the video, Physical Memory is already at 54% with only 32 processes open that look like the normal stock processes outside of aVast and his screen recording software.  Also, his screen recording software is causing spiking to 40-65% just by moving his cursor around.  There is no way that system will be able to run Sonar.

Thanks, I’ve always worried that aero glass might impact performance, but I use it anyway. Now I can luxuriate in its nostalgic ambiance, while the world continues to get more ugly all around me...

There is one thing which will eventually force even the most reluctant of us to upgrade to Win 10, and that is that Noel hinted recently that Sonar support for Win 7 will cease at some point in the not too distant future.

Windows 7 will be supported until 2020
But!!  The Dok says that Sonar and other daws vst companies may stop support before then.

After having Win10 installed on my laptop for several weeks now. I find it works well and is in general more responsive than Win7, and seems to work well with Sonar.

My only real issue, with regards to audio production, being I cannot reduce the memory usage at boot up to less than 35%. I've tried turning off everything that I can think of, Win7 used to settle at 32% for me, and that extra 3% does make a difference on a 32bit install where the actual available memory is something just over 3GB. There are one or two projects that I've had to reduce the number of VST's just so I can keep working on them.

I find the implementation of settings, and where and how to find and adjust them, a little clumsy. I think this may have something to do with Microsoft trying to make Win10 a one-stop OS for all devices. In doing so it seems that some things are not in an obvious place, or are in more than one place, for either a full blown desktop setup, a laptop/tablet, or a smart phone install. It may be a minor thing for someone more well versed in the intricacies of computer workings, but for me it's just a distraction, and I find myself spending a lot more time than I would prefer, searching for certain settings that were a little easier to find in Win7.

I will persevere with the Win10 install on my laptop, as it seems both Microsoft and Sonar are trying to make this a better way of working with audio. I applaud them (mostly Sonar) for trying.

Old software still works.  I had Finale 95 on W7. I bet Sonar 5 works.

Rumor has it with the upcoming W10 build you can clean install and use your W7,8 key to start activation.
