  • Did we lose our on track "Gain" automation envelopes? Did they even exist before?

I just went to create Gain Envelopes on a couple tracks using Automation Lanes. Gain was nowhere to be found in the possible parameters. I could have sworn this was a track auotmation option. Yes I know that it can be done on a clip but I don't want that (if I switch takes then EVERY clip would need to be automated).

Did something happen here or wam I just hallucinating that we used to be able to control Track Gain?

If we cannot control Track Gain via the track automation lanes why the heck not? It's a very important control and it's on the track strip so should be accessible.

If I'm just having a total brainfart (which is entirely possible) please enlighten me as to where the track Gain option has gone. I've got Volume (don't want that because it takes over the fader), Pan and Mute in my options. That's it (aside from the FX stuff on the track).

And again... Sonar Automation is kicking me in the nuts when trying to do something simple. One of the few elements of the program that consistently causes me problems.

Sorry to be negative... but this is pretty basic stuff you kind of expect to be there and working.

Cheers.

Oh and Win7 64 Sonar Platinum Lexington.

Cheers.

This has come up before. Online documentation does indicate that you can automate track gain, but so far as I know this has never actually been possible. You'll have to use clip gain, or maybe route the track through an Aux track so you can automate Volume on the source track to effectively have automated gain on the Aux track.

Or, assuming the intent is to get the right input level for some FX on the track and the input level of that FX is not automatable, you could put an FX in the chain ahead of the FX that needs a varying input, and automate the the output level of that FX.

Many ways to skin the cat, but it does seem a little odd, and possibly unintended, that track gain cannot be automated.

Thanks, Brundle. So I was hallucinating. I must have used Clip Gain previously but I could have SWORN I automated track Gain before. Yeesh... I've recommended it enough times around here.

Thing is my experience using automation in Sonar is very limited compared to all the other stuff I use daily simply because every dagned time I try to use it it exposes some new limitation. It's just too frustrating to even mess with aside from times I absolutely MUST use it... and then I've gotta jury rig some insano, backwards arse scenario with vistual bubblegum, spit and and ductape.

Anyway... in this case (where I would have just used Gain automation) I went and copied then cropped/faded some temporary clips to track against (so I could retain the originals for the recipient). Total long way 'round.

Ugh...

Alright... there's my auotmation whinge for the day. I'll get over it but may start seeing if Reaper will be a better options for this type of stuff. I'd really like to not have to shuffle files back and forth between programs like that though. Maybe Rewire is an option.

and now I'm just rambling... lol.

Cheers.

If volume automation won't work, gain automation is available in busses I think.  So one fast way to do it would be just to stick it on a dedicated bus then automate gain there.  I think.

Yep, busses can have their gain automated.

Ah... that's where my hallucinations came from. I was automating busses.

I guess, in this case, it maybe kind of sort of would have worked but I've already moved on (with spit and bubblegum).

That is a glaring discrepancy/omission though.

I really have a hard time believing the Bakers overlooked including track Gain automation... but the alternative is they haven't noticed it isn't there for all this time (and I'm shocked I haven't noticed it myself).

Wowsers.

Anyhoo... mystery solved... or sumthin'.

Thanks doods.

A good workaround is simply to add an empty FX chain container to the top of the ProChannel. This gives you an automatable input and output slider, either of which can be used as automatable gain.

Yeah, I do stuff like that often but it's not quite the same as the Gain knob because it can get broken if you change the Pre/Post status of the PC (whereas the Gain knob is always first after the clips). That is unlikely in my schemes but it's not ideal.

Just a very strange thing to not have access to is all and it threw me sideways for a second while I was trying to get stuff done.

Plenty of ways around it fershure tho.

Cheers.
