  • So..... is this possible or what?

I posted this a while back, can't find the thread, but never really got a definitive answer.  Since the staff view pretty much sucks in Sonar (although EVERYTHING else is absolutely stunning), is it POSSIBLE to use a notation program like Sibelius and "link" it to Sonar?

For example, could I write string parts in Sibelius and have Sibelius trigger a VST such as Dimension Pro or Rapture?  I always thought that this was called "rewire," but apparently my understanding of rewire was wrong.  Plus, Sibelius doesn't show up as a "rewire device" in Sonar.

Thoughts on this?

Can't it generate midi data events in your notation software, and import those as midi tracks in Sonar?  Would that work for you?

It has been ages since I used Finale, but seem to recall doing it way back then even.  I would think Sebelius would support doing that.

Probably, but I haven't tried it.  So, you just import the MIDI track as if you had played it on a controller, but instead you wrote it in the notation program?

Hey Melodic,
I've used the Sonar Rewire function for Notion 4 on a very limited basis in X1, 2, and 3.  It seems to be okay ( 1 or 2 minor glitches) in that regard.  As I understand it, currently you can only export Music XLM files out of Sonar into notation software or Midi files from most notation software into Sonar and not the other way around.
Best,

Jimmy . . . the Staff View in Sonar does not suck, in fact it's rock solid, but just not the "notation" software everyone expects it to be. It works great for pop songs, but if you're doing orchestral scoring it will fall short. As heydan says, the options for rewiring orchestral score software into Sonar are very limited, and I have also found "Notion" software to work best.

. . . but my main preference for orchestral composition in Sonar is loading up various orchestral samples, and switching between Staff View and Piano Roll View to do the composition / editing. It's also very helpful to right click on the Staff View Multidock and select "Lock Contents", so you can then create multiple Staff View Multidocks for the various separate instrument sections.

I disagree....I think the staff view in Sonar is absolutely terrible.  Actually, miserable.  That's a better word.  Yes, it "works," but it's such a pain in the ass to use that it's like... why even bother?  It takes so much effort to do certain things that other programs, like Sibelius can do in an instant, that it's ridiculous.

I understand that they don't wanna put time and energy into developing staff view - I don't even have a problem with that.  I know that they have to cater to their core customer base first and maybe a lot of them don't care about staff view.  But, couldn't they at least find a way to allow the well-known programs to interact with Sonar?  Just a thought.

Sibelius sucks as a DAW...the functionalities or the two types of programs are very different.

Craig is, of course right. Sonar is not designed to be Sibelius. Why would anyone expect it to behave as such?

Same with Sibelius.

The solution is for each to do its job well, but also for them to be able to talk to each other (in both directions).
Otherwise the poor human in the middle has to do all the translating.

Noy nekker is correct.  if I write a piece in midi in Sonar,  it would be really nice to be able to move it to a notation file in finale.  I tried it, *saving as* midi and it had mixed results.  Is there any way to tell Sonar to *rebar* the piece you performed in Sonar?  I know it's possible in the notation program but it'd be nice if somehow you could do it before saving it as midi.  Quantize doesn't really do it.  I guess one could go through the entire piece in Sonar notation and change it to how you want it, save it in Sonar as midi, then transfer it.
