  • How to drag-drop more than one track to another position

I have 6 vocal tracks that were recorded after recording 9 guitar tracks.
I wanted to move them above the guitar tracks, so I selected them all and tried to drag-drop them to the new position.
I tried with Shift, with Ctrl and with Alt.
No matter what I did, only one track moved.
What is the correct way to move multiple tracks?

You gotta put them in a folder.

Quickest way...

Create Folder
Select the tracks
Right Click on one of the tracks
Select Move to Folder (then select the desired folder)
Drag the folder to desired location

You can cut a step out there; "new folder" is an option in Move To Folder, so you don't need to create it first.

Would be nice to be able to drag groups of tracks around that aren't in folders, though, I agree.

And if you don't want the tracks in a folder after that...

Select the Folder
Right Click
Select "Delete Folder"
A popup comes up that asks if you want to delete the tracks as well... click No

The tracks should force their way into whatever area you put the folder.

Not elegant and yeah... Ctrl Drag procedures would be nice for multi selected tracks but that's how I'd do it.

This would get totally fuxxored if you wanted the tracks in the middle of another existing folder... which is another reason our desparate calls for "Nested Folders" should be answered.

Man could I ever use nested folders... and folder statuses obeyed in the Console View.

Good one. I just concocted that scheme on the fly (just now) so didn't think of that.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around a bizarro solo I am trying to write so here I am twisting my head on other crap hoping the solo will write itself in my hindbrain (and yes that actually works for me).

lulz...

Folders have issues all of their own.

What issue? They work fine. They just have design limitations for certain things (such as the lack of nesting which I've already whinged about).

In this application what's the hindrance. There may be a solution.

Drag a track to the bottom of a folder. Where does it end up?

Some years back I sacrificed many hours compiling recipes to reproduce bugs in Folders. Some were addressed. The one above is one I remember and I just tried - it is still there in Lexington. Enough.

All I want is to drag 'n' drop a selected group of tracks. An everyday housekeeping requirement. Can't be that hard.

Instead of dragging it to the bottom of the folder drag it UP to the folder area. The track will drop itself at the bottom of the folder.*

And yes... as stated I wouldn't mind being able to drag multiple tracks around either but when it can't be done at all... it's definitely "that hard" (because it's currently impossible... AFAIK).

I'm guessing that the problem is, due to the nature of how tracks can stay selected, it could be very easy for someone to make such a multi track move and not realize they are moving a bunch of other tracks as well... thus totally fuxxoring their project. Or there may be some other logical workflow that would get screwed up by allowing this behavior.

The Bakers may have had to make a decision, based on "usual" workflows, to save us from ourselves.

Or it is quite possible they just didn't think of it/haven't gotten around to it.

Either way this one isn't a massive ordeal compared to other things but for now that's how it's designed so this would be a feature request.

Cheers.

*Edit: BTW that workflow makes the most sense, even though it can be annoying when one is not aware of it, because when you drag a track to the bottom how is Sonar to interpret it? Do you want to drag it to the bottom of the folder (inside) or just underneath the folder?

These are the types of things designers/programmers gotta worry about. Annoying job.

Folders work just fine, but it would be great to be able to select and move multiple traks and multiple folders.
