I took the liberty of adding your instructions to the already existing instructions on the SONAR User's Wiki online. They are linked here at the bottom of the page: SONAR MP3 Export.

Thank you for doing this, I really appreciate it!

Sorry but I wouldn't add it so quickly to the SONAR User's Wiki online, techead.

lame -b 48 -m j %I %O

You can replace 48 with whatever bitrate you want. Hit save, and close, and you're done.

48 as an example for a BITRATE is very bad..really confusing..48 is usually associated with the SAMPLE RATE of 48Khz so why using that as an example there?

then also using the same command line ( with the -b option) but this time calling it "sample rate"..

lame -b SAMPLE RATE HERE -m j %I %O
Replace SAMPLE RATE HERE with whatever sample rate you want

I think there are some terms and options you got to learn better, Adam..
still, thanks for trying and i'm sure you will improve it later.

I tried this out, but when I hit save in EncoderConfig.exe the friendly name disappears and is not on the list. And it doesn't appear in the audio export options when I restart Sonar. I tried different names, but they just dissappear every time I hit save. Any ideas?

Which version of SONAR? I'm not too sure about this.

I'm using Sonar 7 Producer on Vista.

(update)
I just answered my own question. It's Vista so I went to C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Utilities\EncoderConfig.exe right clicked and ran it as an administrator.

so i followed the steps and got the file exported. i first exported it at 32 bit depth. It sounded like aliens were coming down from mars. So i tried it again at a 16 bit depth, but it sounded crappy compared to the 32 bit depth wave file i had already exported. but the wave file was 114 MB and the mp3 was only 1.93 MB. So how can i get a smaller file that still sounds decent. I really have no idea what i am doing so any help would be appreciated. I am trying to make it smaller so i can send it to my friends. So how do i do that without damaging the quality? And what size files do professionals use on albums and what kind of files are they? thanks for the help.

Cool tutorial.

Keep in mind they are some example settings in .reg files that you can load. Check the Cake install DVD: \\Utilities\External Encoder Profiles

You should see some .reg files you can import:

LAME MP3 320 CBR.reg
LAME MP3 High Quality Stereo.reg
LAME MP3 Low Quality Mono Voice.reg
LAME MP3 Medium Quality Joint Stereo.reg
LAME MP3 Very High Quality Stereo.reg

Importing these will fill in all the blanks, along with some switch options you may not think of.

There are some in there for FLAC, Monkey's and Ogg Vorbis as well. I assume these are some settings the Cake folks came up with.

When you export, select the export preset you made with EncoderConfig.exe. The bit/sample rate must have the exact same value or you'll get an alien coming down from mars sound. Export a .mp3 at 192k, in both sample, and bitrate, and (what I do), set it to 16 bit. I think it means that your audio card can't support 32 bit though. Mine can, it just takes forever to export.

Excellent! This tutorial made setting it up quick and painless. I notice there are some command live variables for Title, Author etc., How does one implement those exactly?

I might also like to remove the export option of MP3 since Lame works just fine and I'll not be puchashing the key. Anyone know how to remove it from the export list?
