Excuse this.

Excused.

I hardly if at all know the difference between bit and sample rate.

I noticed that.. therefore my post above (#13) .. and yes, Richard (post #22) - no leash

Am I the only who doesn't get this thing working? I've gone through the thorough steps, at least a couple of times, triple checking.
And I still don't see lame on the "Files of type" option nor any pop-up appeared. What's going on?

When you go to Files\Export. If you click on the file type arrow, do you see LAME listed at the bottom?

That's what I don't see...yea, that one.

I don't know what the problem could be but I'll BUMP ya up. Maybe someone else knows.

I just worked through Adam's instructions with perfect results (after doing a forum search on "MP3 Encoder"). I went with a bit rate of 160 for doing quick scratch mixes that I use to evaluate the progression of a song. For real mixes, I export to WAV and use Audacity to render the MP3.

BTW, the bit rate is not a sample rate. It tells the algorithm how many squiggles it may use to approximate the waveform in order to play it in real time at the specified bit rate (I think). So Adam's "48" means there are enough squiggles to just keep up with someone downloading with a modem at 48 Kbps. The higher the bit rate, the more squiggles. An arbitrary waveform is a summation of an infinite number of squiggles.

Very nice. Thanks for the help.

AdamFH,

Sorry you went through the trouble of writing down the LAME instructions, but if you would have performed a search within these forums, you would have realized that back in 2005, I wrote the instructions for getting Lame to work in Sonar and also posted the link to an article that Craig Anderton wrote for using Lame in Sonar as well.

Craig Anderton SOS article 2005 ~~> http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb05/articles/sonarnotes.htm

Jesse G instructions from 2005 ~~> http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=627968&mpage=1&key=򙛨

I am glad that you were able to iron out your MP3 problems, but remember that most of the problems with simple task in Sonar have already been ironed our for use by other users. The reason for these forums is so that each user or forum member won't have to go through the same hassles as another. We learn from each others mistakes and benefit from each other triumphs, that is what makes this forum so great.

Make life simple and perform a search first.

Peace

Yes I did find the instructions from Craig Anderton.
And I do have it working.

I don't know how but on my laptop when I installed over a year ago I can't remember how I got it working in fact I don't even remember trying to get it working but it uses a GUI interface which I think it took from another program. Or maybe I had the Pro audio 9 disk at the time.

This method brings into the DOS environment to convert. Kind of prehistoric in this day and age. The only problem is as stated earlier having to go in and make another whole code to convert at a different bit rate.

I don't know, that just seems odd to coming from sonar who boasts about running in the high tech 64 bit world of vista.
I know they don't make the Lame encoder. But come on, mp3 conversions? This is now! Online dowloads are the new way.

Oh well what can do?

I too was able to follow the instructions and got it working perfectly. Just in case anyone cares, if you send it for internet radio play, they usually want it at 192kbps and some places you sell mp3's won't take anything under 128. FYI.

I went with the Variable Bitrate option because it's supposed to be the best quality of the MP3's, so my command line looks like

lame -V2 --clipdetect -c %I %O

Worked great! Just make sure you hit save at the top of the page before you hit OK!!!!

Or you could just spring for the $20 and download the activation, or $30 and download the encoder...
but then I've got $30, easy come, easy go.

My real question thought, is how do you get LAME not to sound like cr4p at any bitrate less than 192. I use a different(*1) encoder than LAME I want to encode at 128.

*1 - CJ will slap me for saying so but I use the Creative converter for 128 with much better results than LAME. The opposite is true at higher bitrate where LAME seems to shine.

Which is cool if you live in the USA - Europeans get to pay almost double that for the same damn download!
Now I have multiple addresses and have CW products registered in USA France AND thr UK, so I guess I could just lie about where I live currently, but.......

I have just emailed the Cake Support guys whining about this but in the meantime Lame will do nicely, thankyew...
