wish I could get it to install.. I keep getting an error message

well, you can't get help just by complaining.  what is the error message?  what exact steps are you using?  what version of lame are you using?  are you trying to use the lame executable or the raw code?  we'll have to have details to help you instead of just "wish I could get it to install."

Yeah I realize that...but I wrote that to see if anybody was going to help or not. I could have typed a long detailed message only to get a reply like, " yeah dude, LAME doesn't  work with Sonar8.3." or something like that, or I could write a short message  like "wish I could get it to install.. I keep getting an error message." in the hopes of getting a reply like this" What seems to be the problem, maybe i can help."
Does that make any sense to do?

and thanks rodc I will give that a try

I'm running SONAR 8.3 and cannot get LAME MP3 encoder to work follwing these instructions.

After attempting an export "Save As" MP# file, the error message I get is to go to www.Calkwalk.com and unlock the encoder by purchasing an upgrade.

ANyone have any tips?

SONAR comes with a 30 day trial for it's mp3 encoder. You can either purchase the license or use an external encoder. SONAR provides a way to launch an external encoder via Tools > Cakewalk External Encoder Config or export a wav and then encode the mp3.

The SONAR 8 DVD includes several pre-defined profiles for various encoders. These profiles can be found in the \Utilities\External Encoder Profiles folder. You can use these profiles as a starting point when creating your own profiles. Simply double-click the appropriate .reg file to add the information to the Windows registry, then use the 'Cakewalk External Encoder Config' utility to specify the correct install path of the encoder.

I installed the LAME MP3 encoder (ver. [ LAME MP3 Encoder 3.99.5) via the Cakewalk External Encoder Config. I placed all the LAME Encoder files into the Shared Utilities folder inside the PROGRAM folder of SONAR on my C Drive. Then restarted.

Now, when i try to export a file and "save as" the new LAME MP3 encoder SOnar freezes.

Now, it seems it has reeked havoc and nuked all my assignable MASTER routes. That is, when I go to the MASTER section of the track I was trying to export there are no MASTER route options.

SONAR has lost all it's assigned tracked and busses and now is assigned to silent hardware.

Please advise.

Followed all steps and getting error.
1.Unable to Launch "Lame MP3 Encoder" Encoder
2.Warning: The External Encoder returned an error code. The File may not have encoded properly.

SONAR has the same reasons as every other DAW for convoluting the mp3 export process.
Its still a legal reality (c.2015).
If you have successfully aligned LAME Mp3 encoder with free Audacity on your PC- load your product as a .wav into free Audacity and convert to an Mp3 there.
As always- make back-ups.
If you are sufficiently connected to the internet:

https://cloudconvert.com

stupid easy conversion

Peace.

Or you can use Sonar MP3 Patch which adds all the necessary information into Sonar so you can export direct from there free of charge and fully legal.

See the link in my signature for more information.

I bought pyro for mp3 export and for it's various other uses. Turns out I've never used it to export mp3's but have used it extensively as a simple audio recorder. I intend to use it to digitize my music collection at some point too but but have never found the time. It's "library" set up is much preferable to the new WMP which is a freaking joke. Pyro seems to be setup more like the old WinAmp which is more my speed.

Also has some decent correction tools as well. With that and Audacity installed on my laptop I can dork around with stereo files any way I want (without an interface) and not crush the system with full on DAWs like Sonar.
