Has anyone tried it?

I am thinking of testing it.
There is tons of things / drivers and apps that has to work. And Wine is not an emulator. So i guess the Windows programs run ala on the core.

It i loose 1/3 ms in latency I dont care. My limit is 8 ms for tracking guitars.

Wine on Linux is a can of worms. Pretty much a hit or miss thing.  If it works with the application you need, great!  If not, well you will spend a lot of time testing and get no where.  Check here for a current list of programs that are compatible.  https://appdb.winehq.org/

To appreciate the real strength of Linux, you would be better off finding native Linux applications to replace your Windows toys. The native Linux audio system takes a bit of learning curve, as it is quite different from Windows audio.

Tracktion offers a Linux version of their DAW.  https://www.tracktion.com/products/t6-daw

I lost a couple of weekends a few years ago trying to set up a Linux DAW, then remembered that my Windows DAW runs just fine, without the extra effort.  It could be a fun project however, but YMMV!  Good luck!

Reaper also has a Linux native build too.

Linux Ubuntu studio with mixbus and a class compliant interface is the way to go.

Melda productions plugins can be installed using wine.

I have spent quite some time in attempts to run Sonar with Wine.
Current state:
* X2 works out of the box
* X3 also works
* Plat - NO go. Note that technically it can run, when in Demo mode. I personally blame authorization system.

Other DAWs (personal experience):
* Ardour is Ardour (Mixbus has the same engine). Works, but it is not a competition for general purpose DAWs.
* Tracktion Waveform. They also have FXes and Synth which run on Linux natively. Well, should run. After they have released Waveform 8 (and I have bought it), they basically have not managed to make it work under Linux... Simply do not care or with silly explanations why ("it works on our test system", "hard to find", etc.). Note that some bugs was plain simple, like exchanged in/outs. Finally they have fixed some of these bugs, but I have lost trust in what they are doing (no plans to upgrade).
* REAPER by tradition works under Wine and does that well. It is semi-supported platform. Linux native port is long time Beta("Experimental builds"). Every REAPER update is also available as native Linux. I guess the developers simply do not have the feeling it works with production quality (unlike toys producers at Tracktion, for which "can be started == can be sold"). But there is some recent movements, like a dedicated board on forum.

The most problematic part are drivers (for everything). Curiously, Roland/Edirol interfaces have drivers (including declared out of life VS20).

I'm running Linux as my primary OS now (dual boot Linux/Win7 SSD on my DAW) and have native Linux REAPER installed. Using Jack as the audio interface with a pair of M-Audio Delta 2496 cards, I get 8.7ms latency (2.9/5.8ms) 128 samples, which was plenty good enough to record with. I used the free acoustic drum samples that Tod over on the REAPER forum created for ReaSample-o-matic and recorded this test.

I played my V-Drums triggering ReaSample-o-matic for the drums, and then recorded two guitars and bass for a proof of concept. I haven't yet messed with getting any VST/VSTi plugins working yet, as that requires a WINE to Linux bridge (another thing I need to setup), but I have read people are getting a lot of plugs to work, even commercial ones.

If REAPER were to have a native VST/VSTi bridge, it would be a major game changer IMO.

That sounds cool
I was surprised at how responsive it is. I do get lower latency in Windows, but it's only one block size less.

Also, I installed "Airwave" in Linux after posting this, and have a bunch of my free VST/VSTi plugins now working. To Play virtual softsynths I did have to increase the latency to 512ms. This is on a nine year old 2.66Ghz i5 machine though, and a newer faster one would probably be able to go lower than I can hit.
