My Cakewalk software is for Windows 95 and won't install on my Windows 7 computer.  I have a handful (under 10 I think) files that are still in .wrk format that I would like to convert to .mid.  They are just simple midi sequences that I use as accompaniment for my recorder playing.  Nothing fancy.  I downloaded the Sonar trial preload and the actual Sonar download is huge!  I don't want to try to install it and find out I can't save anything.  Is there any easy way to convert these?  Is there maybe a nice service that will do it for cheap?  It's been at least 10 years since I even looked at them because I have a different hobby now, showing dogs.  So far my only idea is polling my friends to see if anybody has some Cakewalk software.  Any other suggestions?  I don't even have any midi software on my computer except for a little demo I downloaded yesterday.  Oh well.  Maybe I'll stick to showing dogs.

.wrk files are small and contain all MIDI information. Windows Media Player can play MIDI files but the instruments may be replaced with the closest match it determines.

Anyone can open these and export as MIDI files for you (with pretty much any CW software actually). If you want to email them to me I can shoot you a PM when I get home. Will be a couple hours, so if anyone else catches this first, no worries.

You should be able to download/install the demo Sonar current version, and bring in each wrk file and create midi output files, as well as evaluate the product, and uninstall it if you don't decide Sonar is for you.
 
I would also suggest to you that Sonar has become unbelievably more feature rich and solid than whatever it looked like 10 years ago, and you might just like its new look and functionality.  
 
Please note that the demo version (to the best of my awareness) does not come with a lot of the plugins you would usually get with the full product, but the demo version is really to test Sonar itself - just didn't want you to be frustrated by that. :)
 
Anyways, I think you should be able to do what you intend to do with your wrk/midi conversion just fine with the demo, unless I am missing something.

The save functionality in the DEMO version does not work, so installing the DEMO is moot in this situation.

I am not sure that would be an issue, as to create a midi file you can just drag the target midi track(s) to the Windows desktop and it should create the midi files in doing that.  Sonar is built to do that, and that drag to desktop functionality isn't clicking on menu options - I think it might well work.
 
In any case, even if it didn't - it's easy enough to remove Sonar once finished with the conversion to midi files or if it failed.
