All-

I just installed Toontrack EZDrummer2 (Upgrade from EZDrummer1). Now, several of my SONAR projects are messed up...Some synths play, others don't. I am looking for suggestions as to what to do.

1. Is it enough to uninstall EZD2? Can I even do that without affecting EZD1?
2. I set a system restore point just before the upgrade. Should I go that  route? I have never done a system restore before.
3. Is there some way to fix the problem? Restart the computer, change some setting in SONAR?

Suggestions welcome!!!

I'm not so sure. I played with the "Show number of track outputs on startup", but it did not seem to solve the problem. Then I noticed that the audio tracks in my synth folders had DISAPPEARED! I added a new audio track to the folder and then directed the midi track to it, and set it's output to the synth and it worked...At least I have sound, now....But I am not happy. I will work on this some more. Further suggestions welcome!

Well, this is what I found so far regarding using EZDrummer2. PLEASE NOTE that I am just beginning to look at this, but I have made some progress. The following may not be 100% accurate, but I wanted to share. -Bob

It seems that if you do not open an old (pre-EZD2) project in just the right way, you will corrupt it. In my case, all or most of the audio tracks associated with a synth disappear - with no hope of recovery as far as I can tell.

However, if you do the following, you may be okay:

1. Before using SONAR in a post-EZD2 environment, back up all your projects. I would suggest copying them to a dedicated special-purpose location (folder) so you know these were saved as part of the EZD2 install.

2. After the initial EZD2 install, go back to Toontrack.com and download/install any updates. Even if you just bought and downloaded your EZD2, it will need to be updated. I also installed the new sound libraries.

NOTE: For the next steps, I suggest using an existing project that is not too complicated, important or you care much about.

[steps 3 and 4 only need to be performed once]
3. Open a project in SONAR. Open the EZD synth. I think that at that time it will ask you to register and all that business. Maybe you need to add EZD2 to the project...I can't remember. When that is all done, close the project WITHOUT SAVING.

4. Open a project, DO NOT SAVE. Open the EZD2 synth so you see the drum set, then - at the upper right - click on Menu; Sonar Options; then make sure the "Show Number of Outputs Dialog" option has a check mark in front of it. Close the drum kit and re-open and look at the Sonar Options again, just to make sure the "Show...Dialog" is truly checked. Close the project WITHOUT SAVING!!!

[The following step need to be performed every time you open a SONAR project]
5. Open a project. You should see a little dialog box that asks you the number of outputs. For legacy projects, press the "8" button. (16 is the default value). NOTE: It is possible that this little dialog is hidden behind the big SONAR screen. If you do not see the Number of Outputs dialog, minimize SONAR to see if it is hidden behind it. If no little dialog, go back to step 4.

6. Save the project using a different name as the original. That is, if the project is called "mysong", save it as "mysong_b" or some such thing. That way, if "mysong_b" is corrupted by EZD2, you can fall back to "mysong". Also, you should probably also have the project saved in a safe place from before starting the EZD2 install.

7. Close and reopen the project. How does it sound? Any missing audio tracks? I hope not!

I will probably update this as I explore a bit further.  Things are looking a little better that they were a while back, but I still am not very happy about this.

I just had to change everything in given projects that had ez drummer 1 in them. To me it was just the easiest way. It changed so many things. This was a while back of course. Wasn't just routing for me...tracks that had True piano were changed to ez drummer 1, etc, etc.....

All this after installing ez drummer 2 of course.

PITA for sure... I have since changed everything.

Are you still using EZD2? If so, what do you think about it now? Was it worth it to go with EZD2, or do you wish you had switched to some other product?

I am feeling about 80% better about EZdrummer2 than I was yesterday. Using Dave Modisette's instructions (see melmyer's link above), and by experimenting a bit, I am in okay shape.

A couple things-
1. Before EZD2, I was having a slight issue with projects not opening in X3 (No Response), which forced me to exit Sonar and try again. That problem now seems worse.

2. I wish I had been warned right in the readme file or some other instructions from Toontrack about the whole Stereo Output business. It would have saved me messing up one project - the first one I opened after the install. It is a bit of a catch-22...You need to open a project to fix the setting, but then saving the project at that point corrupts it.

That having been said, this new EZDrummer 2 seems to have all the bells and whistles...I did a brief overview of the manual, and there is a lot there compared to EZD1. I look forward to trying out the new features.
