I have a midi drum track. I want to change the velocity of a single key. I select the track to focus, then play the key I want to edit on my keyboard. Now only the notes I want to change are selected. With Velocity in the fx bin, I set the velocity range and randomize for my hi hat to have some life. I apply the effect.

But, every note is affected, not just those highlighted. Do I have to extract the notes to another track and bring them back in, or can this be done on the existing drum track?

Using the MIDI FX bin would affect every note of the track, not just the selected notes.  Also, the MIDI FX bin only affects the MIDI playback - does not change the actual data as stored by Sonar.

However, using the PRV, select just the hi-hats.  Then, in the track view, right click on the clip that contains the selected hi-hats. From the menu that appears, select process effect|MIDI Effects..... ).  You can even audition your changes. Once you apply the settings, only the hi-hats will change (by the fact these are the only events selected).  Bear in mind, however, this changes the actual data as stored by Sonar.

Hope that helps
