I like the general concept of Patch Points and Auxiliary Track, but I'm trying to wrap my head completely around the concepts of the two and I'm not yet able to completely differentiate.  When are some examples of when you use Patch Points, and when do you use Auxiliary Tracks?  I'm specifically interested in the concept of combining multiple tracks into one and I'm not 100% clear of of this situation would be best with which method. 

A Patch Point is the thing that takes a signal and places in a track or buss. It is an internal routing path. An Aux track is a track that can receive audio from other tracks or buses.

Stated another way, and Aux Track is a track with a Patch Point as it's input.  Selecting 'New Aux Track' when assigning a track's output is a convenience shortcut for the two steps involved in creating a patch point and a track to use the patch point as its input, with the original track's output routed to it.

I think one the hardest parts of Sonar to really master is how to fully take advantage of:

• Aux tracks
• Patch points
• Aux bus'es
• Sends/Returns

I know just enough to use them for what I need, but I bet there are much better ways of using them. For instance, on my last track I wanted to run a convolution reverb on the entire mix except one ambient background fx track. I know I could set up the reverb as a send and then control the amount for each track, but I wanted the entire mix to have it at the same levels and got better results using the reverb's internal mix control. Then I set the fx track directly to my soundcard out by using an aux track and didn't go through master bus for it, that way the fx track was clean. This gave me the effect I wanted, but I'm sure it could have been done better.

I don't understand why you would need to use an aux track to direct a track directly to your soundcard output. You could do that with the original track too, unless I'm misunderstanding how you set things up.

I'm glad for the extra flexibility in Sonar but not so glad that there are now so many different types of tracks with distinct functions. I hope that in the future, the aux track, bus track and regular audio track can be integrated in a single concept. Patch points are a great and powerful addition though!
