  • Will ASSIO4ALL mess with other ASIO drivers?

Normally I use an Octa-Capture but I noticed that IKM now says that I can use the iRig Pro to connect using ASIO4ALL, to my PC laptop. I'm thinking of giving it a try for use out on the rear screened porch to mess around and try some new things without either using Amplitude or Multidaw and my phone or having to bring the OC out and plug it in. It seems like I remember something from a couple of years ago about having ASIO4ALL installed could cause a problem. I could just bring my Toneport UX-2 out, it is USB powered and easy to hook up. I was just sitting here on the porch and was going to play around with Rapture Pro but it wont recognize my onboard soundcard (I'm not looking for a great quality preamp, just wanting to mess around in the nice weather and learn a bit).
So, ASIO4ALL... potential trouble or no problem?

Thanks, J

Potential trouble, and I haven't heard anything different lately.

TY Charly! I will just use the UX-2 for this sort of messin' around outside. I'll just keep using the iRig Pro with my iPhone. I'm eligible for an upgrade in July and am going to get a 64G 6+ phone... happy happy! Who needs an iPad?

Thanks again!

I got a 128 gb 6+ and sold my iPad Mini(R)..... I have 50+gb of music

PS - It should be called ASIO4NOW, as that is all it is good for. A temporary kludge to get by  for a bit.

I don't have any issues with asio4all. I had unending loads with regular installed soundcards (w7-64). the virtual ins and outs come in extra-handy too.

The point is this.
If your computer is normally using a proper audio interface and real ASIO drivers you should not install ASIO4all. It will cause some issues and commonly it takes over your proper drivers every time you boot Sonar. It's well known to be invasive to your audio system.
But if you have a laptop you want to just mess around with, and are never going to hook a proper interface to it, then asio4all is an option over using on board drivers... sometimes.
It's just best to always have an interface on hand. Pick up a little Focusrite Solo for example.

ASIO4ALL is a crap shoot.  It may work for some but not work or cause other PC problems for others.  This seems to be the general consensus on forums I visit.

In my case I tried it for a device (for testing) and it totally screwed up my (at the time) Saffire Pro 40 drivers and the drivers for an Alesis IO26.  I had to uninstall the ASIO4ALL and reinstall the Saffire Pro 40 and Alesis IO26 drivers.

ASIO4ALL seems to install itself as a higher priority driver (to Windows) which does weird things to legitimate ASIO drivers. As it is truly WDM, be very conscious of this and monitor things if trying it. It does uninstall cleanly (reinstall genuine ASIO afterwards just in case), so testing it out will destroy nothing.
