Michael Jackson loosely fit that description and used an SM7 on Thriller. Any way you can try out some mics before you buy one? Maybe an ADK Vienna or Hamburg.

My daughter has an SM7b and she is visiting next month. I'll get her to bring it so I can try it.
Going to order a Cloudlifter. I'm going to try it with several mics I have and with the SM7, from what I've read it really makes a good dynamic mic like the SM7 "be all it can be", supposed to help the MXL R144 too, and I have one of them. Logical next step I think.
I checked out the Hamburg, there is a MK8 now, 349. I think that is the same price as the SM7b.
I've looked at the KSM44 for several years, I'd love one but once I get in the 1k range I start thinking I may as well spend 1.5K then what's another 500 bucks, pretty soon I am way over my head.
Thanks again, I'm looking at the Gauge ECM87 too, it's ony 149 bucks and looks good. I have one of their small condenser mics, the ECM84 and it's good.
I'll let you know what I think of the Coudlifter.
A friend from a band I played in circa 1970 asked me to do lead vocals on a song for him and I want it to be the best it can be.
