I tried to use it with Sonar X3 and Sibelius and sync was far too unreliable to use.  With Notion it was reliable as far as sync but passing MIDI data from Sibelius to Sonar was unreliable.  Even if I got it to work, Sibelius and Notion don't implement re-wire in a way that would be useful to me.  If you could load all of your sounds into your DAW and just run a re-wired notation app to send MIDI data and control the VSTi's in the DAW it would be usable to me.

No.  Rewire is not an option with Overture, the former Cakewalk score editor.  I had to switch to LoopBe30, but it only carries MIDI.  It is very simple to use and rock-solid.  But audio from a soft-synth can be plugged right back into a Sonar track via the device ports, so no problem.

i could never get Sonar to Rewire with Notion, which is a shame as i find notation much easier to use than piano roll/midi editing for orchestration. Notion is a great product in its own right though.

Never used Rewire. It appears that everyone is talking about using it to get midi from say, Notion, into Sonar, so you can then mix and master. But what about using it the other way? That is, to send midi from Sonar into Notion, so you can work on a professional score? that would be my interest, but I can't find anything on that. It looks like a one-way street.

use it with sibelius and reason... haven't had any unusual sync issues with either except for repeated passages in sibelius.

Actually it is a one-way street, but from host to client. So if Notion is the client, you should be good to go: SONAR sends the MIDI, and Notion audio appears in SONAR's mixer along with whatever you have going on in SONAR. I haven't tried it, but based on ReWire theory it should work.

So, I can export my Sonar files into Notion, and they will become a score there? That's what I'm talking about. I know XML files can be exported/imported, but usually people are doing that to go from one DAW to another. I'm talking about going from a DAW project in Sonar, to a notation project in Notion or some other program.

I occasionally reWire Reason into Sonar.  Still some really nice synths and other instruments there that I really like.  One of the things I use it most for is the Abbey Road Keyboards refill.

Rewire is a real time process. It allows you to pass midi data to a client which then returns audio to the host.

It doesn't work well for notation in this case because Sonar has to be the Host. Now if Notion could be the host you could write your midi score in Notion Rewire to sonar as Midi and return the audio in Notion. Sadly it doesn't may works as the former not the latter.

You can export XML from Sonar and import it into Notion, but for the editing effort required its easier to just do the project in Notion if a good quality score is what's required. Notion hosts VSTis but if the sound isn't good enough that's when to export the MIDI XML and then open that in Sonar and then finish the audio side if you also want a master able finished audio project. A bit convoluted but the only way I've been able to get it done well.
