Best as I can tell, the ReWire master program can only send MIDI to it's slave. The slave can't send MIDI anywhere. I would absolutely love for a ReWire2.0 or something to come along and overcome this. My dream is to be able to use my rather expessive Ableton Live specific controllers to their full potential while giving the output to Sonar( which is behaving very well these days, by the way).
Or maybe someone knows a way around this?

Respek.

now that FL Studio has a proper 64 bit program, i've been experimenting with it & rewiring into Sonar (though i get some crashes with it). FL tech support told me to use FL Studio as a plugin instead of rewiring.  what i would love most is a multi-core aware 64 bit version of Project 5 to rewire into Sonar. those would be some good times

We're already on ReWire 2, but MIDI still flows only one way.

If anyone wants a refresher course on ReWire (that uses Sonar as the example of the host program, so its perfect for us Sonarians), here's an article I wrote on the subject.

Can we get a real basic explanation of what it is and what's it's for?

I've been rewiring Reason to Sonar for many years. I have noticed a change though - in the old days I would do lots in Reason and then start using Sonar to add some bits, but recently I tend to start with Sonar and use Reason to add bits. X3's stability has a lot to do with this change (along with shed loads of plugins!).

Grum.

Ref midi: Reason 7 has a new device for sending midi so you can rewire with Sonar and yet have Sonar midi controlled from Reason using a free program that adds virtual midi ports to your computer. I'm sure other DAWs can send midi to an external device so using loopmidi (or similar) can open new opportunities.

Grum.

Very interesting responses so far. Now that I think about it, Reason is kind of an alternative to Komplete...what with Thor, Kong, Subtractor, Malstrom, and the NN-XT, that's a pretty cool collection of instruments.

Reason's samplers are lame if you ever built anything in Kontakt.  There's a reason why there is very little 3rd party development for Reason's samplers.  Kong is fun to mess with.

It's not Cakewalk testing out anything, I'm checking out the level of interest to see if I should write anything applications-oriented about it.

Please do.  I'm in the ignorant crowd when it comes to Rewire.
