  • How Many Here Use ReWire? (p.5)

So I was wondering how prevalent ReWire use was among the community here. Do you use it? Used to use it but don't any more? Want to check it out? If you use it, what do you ReWire into Sonar? Inquiring minds want to know...

I used to use Rewire often . I felt it was a very creative tool to use and i really enjoyed what it brought to the table the times I have used it ...

in the past I used to use  Rewire primarily with SONAR and P 5 ….now I have a nice selection of other musical apps are Rewire compatible  ….

in my personal experience using Rewire . I found that it was a very helpful tool learn and use .
when I first started using it , I sort of used  Rewire in a " spray and pray type of approach " …lol
I later found out that it was a lot easier for me  to take a song or a project that I was stuck with ,  or in some cases I just felt like playing around and finding new musical ideas in a different playground ..

I would create a work file / mix of my tune or idea and bring it into my intended Rewire app...
after matching the tempo I had the luxury to experiment and find new sounds I would not of found any other way...
once I found the sounds & parts  VIA the synergy of having used some of my other musical software that was Rewire compatible …
I would then use the traditional approach of linking my new found musical parts to my parent project using Rewire  ..
as far as this thread ,
I'm interested in hearing what you have to say ...

Reason's samplers are lame if you ever built anything in Kontakt.  There's a reason why there is very little 3rd party development for Reason's samplers.  Kong is fun to mess with.

No question Kontakt is the "king of samplers," and deservedly so. But the fidelity of the NN-XT is excellent, and sometimes you want a sampler where you can throw things together quickly, get them mapped, and start playing. I think it strikes a good balance between functionality and ease of use. I also think Thor is pretty impressive.

i did a project a few years back rewiring Reason... maybe my pre-Sonar years using Cubase and i never tried it again so it must not have been a grand experience.

I use it for Notion...

I used to use Notion, but upgraded to Sibileus 7.5. How does rewire help with notation applications? Easier transfer of MIDI files?

Walt

Hi Walt, no it's not easier to transfer midi files, in fact it's a bit of a ****.  Where Notion is the killer is in the sample library.  Whereas Sibileus is a stronger notation piece of software (from the little I have used it) the samples just aren't as good as Notion IMO.

Rewire is greyed out in Sonar. Waves used to show under rewire but no more. I don't understand rewire but it sounds very useful.

I don't use re-wire. I have an RME UCX which has loopback on all the channels, so I can route audio out of 1 app and into another without issue. It has 2 midi channels so for midi loopback I just connect the out of one to the in of the other.

I don't need this functionality too often. When I make videos, I record with DigiCheck while I record and demo with Sonar. That way I can stop and start Sonar without stopping and starting the recording. The screen capture/video capture software I have is pretty lame so it doesn't do the best job of recording the RME inputs for whatever reason. The slightest hiccup and M$ Expression will stop recording the audio -- by this, I mean starting to record using Sonar can stop the recording of the audio in Expression without me knowing it. I make a 10 minute video and realize I have no sound.

When I make videos, I record with expression (to line up the recording from DigiCheck with the recording from Expression), and I may or may not record using Sonar. When I record using Sonar, it's just for explanation of something I'm showing in the video.

Though the lateralized brain is a bit of a myth, Reason is more "right brain" and encourages experimentation to devise new and interesting sounds.

"Very interesting responses so far. Now that I think about it, Reason is kind of an alternative to Komplete...what with Thor, Kong, Subtractor, Malstrom, and the NN-XT, that's a pretty cool collection of instruments."

I wouldn't call it an alternative, just a different bag of tools, i love NI stuff, Massive is tha bees knees, but would take the kong over battery any day, not that there's anything wrong with battery ;)

If you want to get the best out of any reason instrument, you have to build "combinators", nn-xt, 14.2 mixer, **** load of fx, routing through thor, **** gets endless with reason, couldn't live with out it

Rewire is greyed out in Sonar.

That likely means you either don't have any ReWire-compatible programs on your computer, the ReWire dll is missing, or you're using a 64-bit system but your ReWire dll is 32-bit. (Propellerheads was a bit late to the 64-bit party.)

You can download the dll here.

Also Propellerheads has a document on using ReWire with Sonar. It's fairly old, but the techniques remain valid.
