I have not updated my DAW to W 10 yet because for me it is not free, I did my office computer and it took 24 hours and cost me $35 in bandwith ( I pay for anything over 3 gigs a month)
It was pretty uneventfull I I really don't feel anything improved on that machine. It took me time to beat it into submision and get rid of the "live" crud and and force it back to being under my control. I'm not sure I'm 100% in control yet but it seems to be letting me do all the things I did in the past. I did loose a few older 32 bit apps which are no big deal. Funny they all ran under W 8.1? Might be over time updates will fix these issues.

But be warned if you updating a laptop. Three people I know lost things like the SD card reader and all those handy function keys. Most laptops don't update those sort of drivers.

There should be drivers on the laptop web site for any hardware unsupported by Windows.

I did have an issue with windows ten - after an auto update I all of a sudden had my start menu not work - I had to do a rollback to an earlier date.  As of now it seems to be ok - watching.... very closely... consider yourself on probabtion =-)

John,

I'm afraid Windows might view quiet hours as an opportunity to use your pc because you're asleep. I don't know, but it doesn't look like Windows stay out of my way hours.

Craig, I'm happy you are having no issues. There have been stretches that are do long I thought I was finally risk free, but I'm not.

Quiet time is only to disable notifications.

This will not stop disk scans or indexing or any of the other background tasks from running.

Still it might be useful so that you are not annoyed by beeps and such.

I like W10 a lot, and I've been largely impressed by the update process, but I have run into my first gremlin, and it's a fairly absurd one.

Gremlin phase one was that it gave me an update that basically killed all kinds of stuff. Raid drives not recognised, loads of device drivers incompatible, all kinds of crazy stuff.

Turned out I'd somehow got a preview build, even though downloading of preview builds was definitely not selected, so that's a bit of a cock up at MS's end. No Xmas pudding for whoever was tagging the updates that day.

So I rolled back, which brought me to Gremlin phase two, which is now the calculator app won't work. Apparently, this can happen on roll-back, where completely innocuous standard apps somehow become "unregistered", and you need to do a complete re-install. Apparently nothing is broken with the app itself, but the Windows store won't authorise the update. Of THE CALCULATOR APP. You know, that thing that's basically ran on the same codebase since about 1988 without any issues.

Well, if I must, I will, when I get round to it. I do actually use the calculator app all the time. It's the only thing that's broken, and it's a tiny thing, but really, what a pain.

So no Xmas pudding for whatever spaced out nerd decided building a complex and wobbly authorisations structure to wrap around the windows calculator app was a good idea. "Architecture astronauts", as a smarter man than me called these kinds of developers. Good grief.

I'm beginning to think that when it comes to computers and SONAR, I lead a charmed life.

That's about where I'm at. I have Win10 now running on three machines, all getting on in years and/or underpowered compared to just about anything you'd buy now - studio desktop, large notebook that does double duty as the household go-to computer and mobile studio, and a small ultra-portable netbook.

The update process was almost wrinkle-free on the desktop, virtually all the old hardware and just about all installed software just popped right up on the new system - a couple of manual driver updates and a bit of configuration, but nothing unexpected and no showstoppers, and it's been humming along quite nicely since then. Sonar too, for the most part.

The laptop gave me a bit more of a headache due to MS's default drivers for keyboard and trackpad, which disabled the space bar and half the number keys, and it took some creativity to get it back to full functionality - had to figure out where you can tell the OS to ignore certain drivers and not try to update them. But everything works in the end and it's smoother than 8.1 was - and I was one of those rare people that got along quite well with Win8.

It's a bit sluggish on the netbook, and there appears to be no hope for Intel to make a compatible video driver for their onboard chip, so it's a low-res experience, but still better than anything else - Linux and Win7 both slowed pretty much to a standstill after a while. It's a crappy little thing, but has performed useful funcions a few times, so I haven't put it to pasture yet.

I haven't figured out how to set up a real stripped-down no-background-processes state for mission-critical audio work, because I haven't needed to yet - it's never really bothered or interrupted me yet - but I would be interested if someone finds a solution. I suppose one could simply disable various services, but it would be nice to have a simple toggle that you could hit and know that the damn thing wasn't going to suddenly decide to defrag everything and download all possible updates just when you hit record.

This exactly!

I do a really good job of capturing lots of recordings and I do it with Windows most of the time. I almost never have problems. It's the almost that I struggle with.

And when I fail, if it wasn't me forgetting to plug the kick drum into the interface (or some other fault of mine), it is due to Windows failing me by interrupting the recording with stupid low priority work.

So far, every year, I've had to apologize to someone because of a lost track or set or show due to Windows. I'm hoping that 2016 will be the first year where I never have to apologize for using Windows.

So help me, if I had RME TotalMix on Linux, I'd never use Windows for field recording again. Honest Abe.

Tip; Some of you may know this. Windows 10 has the ability to have multiple desktops. If you click on the task view icon on the task bar you can create and access more desktops. Each one is independent of the others. You can also access them by swiping from the far left on a touch screen.

Windows key + tab will show all open windows. This is very useful for finding hidden windows or for changing tasks.

Hello John ,

Nice Tip I had found that feature a couple of days ago while poking around . I had no idea how to recreate the multiple desktops ....
Your post helped me find how to use the feature again...thank you ...now I even know how to do it ..

On this fine morning I'm over here doing a little experiment . I want to see how useful this feature can be .

On desktop one I opened up a program called Transcribe , loaded an album , plugged in my 7string guitar and went on an all expense paid shopping spee of nicking every guitar lick and musical phrase I could ...

On desk top two I opened SONAR and set it to a song project that I have been working on ..my SONAR is set to not share ASIO drivers w other programs .
Bounced between desktops and both programs played .....that was nice ...

On desktop three the SONAR Reference Guide got loaded ..
Hey scook now your out of a job here on the forum I love you man I'm just kidding ...
one cool thing is I actually prefer to have the SONAR manual on a separate desktop ..
On my laptop I can leave SONAR in the state I left it , dial up the desktop #3 w the PDF and read up on how to do
the task I'm looking to learn / get better at and then go back to my SONAR project with out having to play hide and seek with the GUI in SONAR ...

On desktop four I decided to go on line and come here to the forum and write a thank you post here ..
before i did I wanted to make another desk top and see something for myself .

On desktop Five I loaded up BIAB with a self created practice tune to Blow some 7 string over for a while ...
now what I'm finding interesting is I have that program set to ASIO and as long as I change desktops it seems that Windows 10 allows me to open up more than one music program that has ASIO as my default ...

I have been bouncing around between all 5 desktops to get a feel on this feature ...it is nice

I like this because it brings me into Mac territory on a Windows computer as far as being able to run multiple audio programs simultaneously while doing different tasks in each program . It seems real nice  having programs cooperate with each other w out a glitch ...

Hope I haven't overstepped my bounds as a guest in this thread w the verbiage ....

I would love to know what Craig thinks about how deep Windows 10 will allow the end user to multi task using different desktops while running separate programs ...
( my Win 10 computer is only a test computer with the bare minimum installed )

I wonder is it possible to run SONAR on one desktop and edit a video in Vegas on another desktop for example ?

Does anybody know if  Win 10 will allow full muliti tasking in separate desk tops with full autonomy ? or did I just get Lucky .

thanks all , wishing you the best ,

Kenny
