  • How Does Sonar's Strum Acoustic Compare to MusicLab RealGuitar 3?

I'm about to pull my hair out, and start drinking again over this stupid guitar software.  I'm wondering if Sonar Plat's Strum Acoustic can be ported to other samples, or samplers, and how does it compare to RG3.  It can't be any harder to use. RG3 is just INSANELY difficult for me anyway.  I have griped at them for years about why can't they simply take 10 min. for every major DAW and create screenshots on how to set it up with other samplers.  BUT NOOO!!! Just like the govt, they won't listen to me!

I don't know if I got your problem but Strum Acoustic ist based on physical modeling. No samples are used.

There are no samples to port.

I use the new NI Strummed Acoustic, it's so versatile, easy to use, and sounds brilliant
you have so much  control, and can create total songs using it.

I have both and use both heavily, but I use RG a lot more..  The NI product does sound fantastic but it will only play the preset strumming patterns built into it, and will only play the chords it knows.  The second issue (finite number of chords) will only come up if you want exotic or chords.  You may find the inability to create your own strumming patterns limiting, however.  What it does, though, sounds awesome and the ability to adjust voicings is great.

RealGuitar will allow you to play BOTH the chords it knows (chord mode) or custom chords (keyboard mode) and since strumming is controlled by keyswitches, you can do any strumming pattern imaginable.  It will also do solo guitar parts, finger picking, and it offers steel, nylon, and 12-string guitars.

If you don't need anything fancy, NI is a great deal and sounds good enough for any record.  If you depend on acoustic guitar to drive every song (which I do) and you use complex chords or custom strumming, you probably need RealGuitar.  Example: NI does not have a good straight 8ths pattern.

The RealGuitar manual is not super easy to understand but I can help you, and so can several others on this forum. It is very easy to use once you get a couple of ideas down (like pattern playing mode).

PS I also use RealStart and RealLPC from MusicLab, but RealGuitar is my backbone.

I now have 6 strummable options in Sonar:

Music Lab - Real Guitar 3
Indiginus - Strum Maker IV
Orange Tree Samples - Stratosphere
Native Instruments - Strummed Acoustic
3 Acoustic Guitars - + some mediocre mics
AAS - Strum Acoustic

. . . and AAS Strum Acoustic remains #6
I guess the main advantages it has is that it came "free" (included) with Sonar, and is easy to learn.

Like Konradh says Real Guitar 3 is the most powerful / flexible, but perhaps the steepest learning curve.
. . . if Music Lab ever comes up with a more user friendly way of creating custom patterns, they will be far ahead of the pack in every way.

If you just want to sit down and play right away - - -> NI Strummed Acoustic and AAS Strum Acoustic

I think they all have goodness, but I don't touch them anymore. I finally figured out how to record my real acoustic to sound ok. (I had mic'ing issues)

I think Orange Tree's strum engine is the best, simple and intuative and very effective. Steel Strings and Strawberry will now work with the free Kontakt player and also support NI Komplete Kontrol standard so they are options for those who do not have the full version of Kontakt.

You draw the strums on a graphic fretboard and assign an articulation. So its pretty easty to have a upstroke palm mute on the top four strings alternating with a half palm mute down stroke on the the bottom 4 with a 6 string sustain to finish the bar, if you get my drift.

Of course you can also drive the instruments with MIDI. the various articulations are velocity switched. Its simple to set up velocity switching using a sliders on the interface.

If I use AAS Strum Acoustic GS-2, can I do the following:
I. A MIDI Track - to send the chord notes
ii. Another MIDI Track - to send the pattern [Strumming keys / individual 6 keys]
AAS Strum Acoustic GS-2 converts the chords input to guitar fret keys and will play through AAS Strum Acoustic GS-2 audio engine.
I want to output MIDI data from AAS Strum Acoustic GS-2 to send to other MIDI instrument.

AAS Strum Acoustic GS-2 supports MIDI data send?
