I don't remember exactly when this started happening, but when I double-click a channel strip's Gain value, the square brackets appear, but the field is not highlighted and I cannot enter a new value.
 
Double-clicking works fine for the Volume fader and I'm fairly sure it still works for the Send and Pan knobs too.
 
Anyone else experience this?

Double-click sets controls to their default position (i.e. 0dB for both Gain and Volume). It isn't the same as hitting Enter, which is what you need to do to edit the value.

I don't mean double-clicking the Gain pot or knob itself.  I mean double-clicking on the value displayed on the track strip, in the Console View, so that you can enter a specific value from the keyboard.  I can't do that with Gain, but I think I could previously.
 
You can double-click a volume Fader and set it to zero, but you can also double-click the Fader's displayed value and type in a number and presss Enter.
 
 

In the track view, the value display is apart of the control object, not a separate object as in the Console. As I said, you have to use Enter to enable editing the value in the track view.

I don't use Sonar everyday and I guess I forgot how to enter a Gain value from the keyboard in Console View.  I mix with the Console and never in Track View.  I keep the volume/pan/gain parameters hidden in Track view.
 
Anyway, here's what works in Console View:
 
Left-click the Gain knob  [Square brackets appear]
Press F2 [Edit window appears with +\- buttons and a text field]
Click +\- or type a Gain value in the field
Press Enter
 
I sure don't remember having to hit F2 in Sonar X1-X3 and it seems inconsistent to me that a Double-click on the value directly below the Volume fader opens a text box for entering volume, Double-clicking a Send knob opens a text box, but the extra steps are required to do the same thing when it comes to Gain.
