  • I made my first vid... about making vids... of Sonar of course.

Ya'll may have seen me crushing my little brain noodle over the past while over screen cap vids of Sonar (and other crud). I've got it all sorted and made a loooong arsed vid (almost 5 hours) of how I did it if you want to check it out. I did create chapters with links in the description though to make it easy to navigate.

I'm using Mirillis Action! for the screencap software and Voicemeeter for audio routing and finally Reaper to record discrete audio of the system sounds (because you cannot record FROM one Sonar project into another one). There is way more info in there though that can likely be applied to various combinations of other programs for this purpose.

I did not script it and barely edited it. This was just a test of MANY things I've been wanting to do for a while.

Might help someone else trying to figure out this type of thing but really... I was just testing stuff for future adventures.

It is also intended to allow complete beginners to be able to set this type of thing up. I intend to record a "Quick Setup" guide of the programs involved for those who don't need the endless prattling and pontifimications.

Cheers.

PS: Many thanks to everyone who helped me along the way to get this all set up. I made sure to thank the forum in the credits. Ya'll rule.

Beep - How long did it take to upload a 4-3/4 hour vid to utube?

This looks & sounds very pro to me after clicking thru it.  It will take a really long time for me to complete a video this long.  Very nicely done

The upload was surpisingly fast (about 20 minutes IIRC). The youtube "processing" is what took a while. That's where they do their conversion to the various resolution levels. That I let sit overnight so I don't know exactly how long it took so I'll just say 24 hours.

However I think it makes the lower res versions it processes available quickly then as the higher res versions get processed they get added to the vid options.

All I know is it was ready to go the next day up to 480p.

And then they took it down... for some unknown reason. I had to appeal it and get it reinstated. Very odd. That took up another day but all seems to be well now.

I have however seen reports of wicked long upload times. I may have just gotten lucky or their Canadian server doesn't get as slammed as others (if they even have a Canadian server).

Cheers.

Right on. It's really the type of thing that unless you REALLY need to know it it's likely not helpful/useful.

However the entries on Voicemeeter and the wacky routing might be interesting to some.

Cheers.

Some things are just cool to know, even if not necessary Never used Voicemeter, and like to see how others work as well , so it is more out of curiosity than "the need to know"
All the best.

@Zargg...

I checked out a LOT of vids/tuts on Voicemeeter and they only seemed to allude to the "Composite" outputs. Those are the outputs necessary for us audio guys to tap into to separate our channels from each other (system sounds, mic, other live inputs, etc) so that would likely be interesting/useful to those not really concerned about screencap stuff.

I show how to tap into those channels in both Sonar and Reaper (and cover how to set up the inputs into VM as well which of course is important).

Voicemeeter is great but it's kind of a weird design that you gotta really dig into to figure out where everything is going (and coming from). I could have gone into WAY more detail on it but I just wanted to cover what's needed for this style of routing.

However for just simple routing that ouputs as a stereo channel VM is sooper easy. I wanted more separation though so... well I got obsessed. lulz

Cheers.

they probably took it down, because initially you're limited to 10 minute videos I believe.  Then after a few more videos, I believe you can extend the time.  Check in your Youtube settings.  Seems like they did it for you right away!

Also, not that I get a zillion views or anything, but consider breaking your videos down to MUCH smaller segments.  I find that almost the shorter they are, the longer people will watch (IOW watch more or all the video).  You can see all that stuff in your YouTube stats.  Many of my 5 min vids get 75% retention or so, whereas anything longer than 15+ minutes usually loses a lot of views about a 1/3 of the way in.
I'm guessing without viewing yours yet, you could break it down into a lot of segments and then form a "playlist" on YouTube.

I'll have to check it out like others, when I have a spare 1/2 day ! :-D  Seriously...will scroll thru it and check it out.

Actually you have to "verify" your account to extend the time limit beyond 15 minutes. Takes about a minute but they gotta give you an autocall to give you a verification code.

The old system was different I think though.

I'm pretty sure they yanked it the first time because I used too many tags or something (but I was mislead into believing you could add as many as you want as long as they pertain to the vid... which mine did). They never explained it so IDK... I appealed and it came back.

Definitely a learning experience and navigating youtube itself was part of my little test/experiment. I intentionally wanted to put up a vid longer than 15 mins because... well I have a tendency to blather on so my vids are likely to be... urrrh... longish.

lulz...

Cheers!
