Also, not that I get a zillion views or anything, but consider breaking your videos down to MUCH smaller segments.  I find that almost the shorter they are, the longer people will watch (IOW watch more or all the video).  You can see all that stuff in your YouTube stats.  Many of my 5 min vids get 75% retention or so, whereas anything longer than 15+ minutes usually loses a lot of views about a 1/3 of the way in.
I'm guessing without viewing yours yet, you could break it down into a lot of segments and then form a "playlist" on YouTube.

I'll have to check it out like others, when I have a spare 1/2 day ! :-D  Seriously...will scroll thru it and check it out.

Hehehe... yeah it totally could but really I'm not in it for the hits or the likes or whatever. I just want to share whatever I know in a convenient format for the viewer.

In this case I felt that keeping it all in one vid and adding the "Chapter" links in the description was better than a playlist. I personally prefer vids setup like that but maybe I'm a little weird.

I would however like any opinions on such things though because really as I make these vids... it's for you guys (and whoever else stumbles upon them).

Just want to share what I know while I still tread this earth... yanno? It's important to me.

Cheers!

An excellent sentiment, sir, one that I understand very well...I know. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to the wealth of knowledge this and future vids will impart :)

Thank you!

yeah...I agree if you're in it for the hits and likes, you won't get any!  If you come across as sincere, interesting and having fun, seems to be the formula.  I just suggested shorter times, because people scroll thru stuff nowadays with a short attention span.  Therefore, to potentially help more people, you might want more viewers...make sense?

and yes, I have some people on my subscribe list that I watch, that I'll sit thru a 20 minute vid or more.  Pensado, Pete Thorn, to name a couple.
But some of the home hackers like myself, if I'm bored after 5+ minutes, I usually click thru and/or move on myself.

It took me a couple months to get rolling and I cringe at my first videos, but things are steadily gaining and I'm actually having more fun and feel my videos are getting much better as I move along.

one last comment for now  (sorry!!)..  You might shoot for 1080hd for a resolution and I think 4K will be more popular in a year.  Makes a big difference over 480 and I'm sure your screen capture has that setting.  Of course much larger files then too, but give good clarity when watching full screen (like on my 27" monitors).
Quickly scrolling, I heard some audio issues, but over 4.5 hrs...eh?
For a first vid...bravo!

You hang in there, Robby. Based on friends and family who have faced the "terminal" diagnosis it seems outright stubborness is the key to squeezing out some extra time.

Take care, bud.

Yeah the audio glitches are from Sonar crapping out a bit because I had to switch to Voicemeeter as the output device. That was kind of part of the test. The project in the vid is actually pretty big with quite a few active effects (not nearly as big as other projects of mine but still). All in all it fared pretty well without having to futz with buffer settings and other optimization crap too much but I will be keeping an eye on that in the future. It got less glitchy the more I messed with stuff.

As far as the vid quality I think that got capped by Windows Movie Maker due to my export settings. I didn't really want to go for the HiDef export due to the length of the vid (and the likely file size after export). I really didn't spend a TON of time studying Movie Maker because it kind of sucks and I'll probably end up using something else in the future. It worked in a pinch though and is relatively easy to edit with.

Again part of the test but for sure... thanks for the input. I am of course new at this so any insights are appreciated.

Consider squashing your file sizes down with a h.264 file converter.  Handbrake is free and comes to mind.  I don't see a difference in the compressed file format.
You might also look at Sony "Movie Studio" which is Vegas little brother for about $40.  It's a good program and records audio as well with up to about 20 tracks.  I typically use Movie Studio Platinum, which is about $90 and gives a couple more bells and whistles.  You get Sound Forge light and DVD architect.

Damn Beeps. You are going to need a program with a razor tool for editting. I have not had a chance to look at this any yet, but the average viewer is looking for scripted videos they can watch in one sitting.

5 hours is like half the original Shogun mini-series!

+1 The Studio Plat package is a pretty good deal.

lulz... I anticipate future vids to be a little more concise but in some cases... maybe not.

The audience I'm going for are those that REALLY need the straight dope on sh*z. I personally can't stand those "quick byte" type vids that hardly explain anything. I end up having to scour around endless vids and other sites to get an idea of how to do what I want.

While researching this stuff just so I could make these programs work together (and how to use them) I watched DOZENS of vids (perhaps even approaching 100) as well as reading the manuals and all sorts of weird sites/posts around the web.

Funnily enough the one vid on Voicemeeter that helped me really nail down what I wanted was over an hour long... and even then it was quite vague about this particular usage (I had to "glean" the configuration from the other stuff he was talking about).

I'm not quite sure where this channel will go or how my vid style will evolve but I'm certainly not out for the impatient, low attention span crowd.

The folks here on site are a good example of who I'd be creating for. Motivated, intelligent and able to focus on something for more than ten minutes. lulz...

However I will be at least "mapping" such vids in the future (f*ck scripting... that would take too damn long and is no fun for me). Hopefully that will keep me moving along a little more quickly with les "ummms", repitition and superfluous sidebars.
