Consider squashing your file sizes down with a h.264 file converter.  Handbrake is free and comes to mind.  I don't see a difference in the compressed file format.
You might also look at Sony "Movie Studio" which is Vegas little brother for about $40.  It's a good program and records audio as well with up to about 20 tracks.  I typically use Movie Studio Platinum, which is about $90 and gives a couple more bells and whistles.  You get Sound Forge light and DVD architect.

Yeah... when I was pondering the MASSIVE file size before uploading to youtube I was looking for good ways to compress and came across Handbrake. I did not snag it or apply it to this but I will definitely be utilizing it in the future methinks.

As for paid software... ain't gonna happen any time soon but I'll definitely take a look at those programs for future wishlistin'.

Thanks.

I checked out a LOT of vids/tuts on Voicemeeter and they only seemed to allude to the "Composite" outputs. Those are the outputs necessary for us audio guys to tap into to separate our channels from each other (system sounds, mic, other live inputs, etc) so that would likely be interesting/useful to those not really concerned about screencap stuff.

Is Voicemeter still necessary now that Sonar supports patch points and synth recording ?  I know that that was why I initially looked into and installed Voicemeter.

Also, not that I get a zillion views or anything, but consider breaking your videos down to MUCH smaller segments.

I don't want to detract from the effort you've obviously expended for our benefit, but just the mention of your vid being five hours long turned me completely off wanting to give it a spin.  If it isn't too much trouble, splitting it up into different issues would definitely encourage us (at least me) to check out what you have to offer.

Very nice work Beep.

@PaulP...

AFAIK patch points and aux tracks wouldn't work for what I'm describing (which is recording Sonar/system output + a live mic into other programs... in this case Action!). What would make Voicemeeter unnecessary for this would be more due to Win10 WDM mode improvements. If those can get close to ASIO quality results then, AFAIK, you could just switch to WDM and avoid the stubborn inflexibility of ASIO mode for program to program recording.

And I actually did break it up into sections but using the "timecode link" method (instead of uploading a bunch of smaller vids). Click on "Show More" in the description and you can navigate the chapters. If you are already intimately familiar with Voicemeeter it may not be much use to you because you'd likely be able to figure the routing out yourself. However the tour of Action! and some of the Reaper audio folder tricks are kind of neat.

Cheeers!

@John... Thanks, dood. The next ones should be better and about more interesting/useful stuff.

Cheers.

Interesting, the thread shows 23 views but YouTube reports 95 views of the video. Does that mean most of the YouTube viewers found it via YouTube's search/recommendation features?

Weird. Thread views are over 300 on my screen.

As for the youtube views I'm not sure but maybe it's logging a separate view as people navigate the chapters?

I doubt it's coming from youtube because pretty much all the views before posting this thread were from me testing it, my one buddy I sent it to before posting this thread and I think the youtube admins looking into my removal appeal.

Then again maybe as people here watch it it got indexed with other tech vids.

Still better than I expected considering how specific the content is.

Thanks doods.

Any vid that I like I DL and look at it as a downloaded vid. So my small time looking at it on YouTube is not the reality. I do know that the subject is something I don't think anyone came up with before. Its typical of Beep to be creative. My only problem with the vid is a certain other DAW is named. I forgive the Beep for that oversight.

A necessary evil in this case because you can't record from one Sonar project into another Sonar project (I tried).

However an explanation and workaround was suggested by one of the forumites (sorry... I forget who ATM without digging up the thread). Basically there is only one Sonar audio engine that can be running at one time so you can't use it to do transport stuff (playback, recording, etc) in two projects at once.

The workaround was to use an older version of Sonar to record the discrete audio tracks (so the source project would/could be SPlat and the target project for the discrete audio tracks could be X3). I did not test that but it makes sense.

Thing is though, as much as it has been streamlined, Sonar is of course a bit more of a resource hog than Reaper. I know having two versions at once going on my system PLUS the screencap software PLUS having the audio stream semi crippled because it's running through Voicemeeter (not the full on Focusrite drivers) I would likely get more audible glitches/dropouts.

Also due to the unlimited demo of Reaper those who only own one version of Sonar (like new users who only have SPlat... and will NEVER have access to two separate versions like we oldster do without hunting down old physical boxed stock) I figured Reaper was a good choice.

And really it was all I had access to aside from my old Sonar installs. I actually really like Reaper as an alternate DAW but I consider it more of a companion to Sonar than anything. I intend to really study it more and use it to hopefully round out some of the workflow things that get in my way in Sonar.

Overall though Sonar is much better for my creative process so as I said... more of companion tool to Sonar as opposed to something I'd use full time.

Soooo yeah, I guess that's probably a long winded explanation but worth mentioning. I did put quite a bit of thought/testing into it and that seemed to be the best "route" (pun intended). lulz...

Cheers!

I'm just having some fun with you Beep. I really don't care what a person uses. Heck, I have at this very moment Sonar Platinum, Samplitude Pro X2, Studio One 3 Pro and Mixbus 3. Plus SoundForge Pro 11 Vegas Pro 13 and FL Studio. I have had Cubase SX1,2 and 3. Logic Platinum 4 and 5, Cakewalk Professional 8 and CW Pro Audio 9 Reaper 4(which never used). All of the Sonar versions starting with Sonar XL. That was the very first Sonar. And a few I can't recall. Who am I to say what a person has and uses? So you see I am a strong Sonar promoter only because I know what other DAWs have to offer. The only one I do real work with is Sonar.

It's almost impossible to do anything really complicated with one piece of software.
