I came to Sonar from FL Studio 12, and even though I only have Professional (hey man, I'm poor and the exchange rate is complete ass, cut me some slack! :P), the performance difference between them when using "heavier" stuff like AD2 and EastWest libraries is like night and day. FL absolutely chugs when I stick an amped up AME2 instance and an AD2 instance in the same project. Sonar? Nope, none of that. :)

I mean, FL's mixer is super easy to use, but a) limited tracks, and b) limited inserts!

Also, I laughed when I read a Sonar announcement thread on GS. One or two people were claiming Sonar is **** and that the CW forums are a circlejerk... while creating the opposite circlejerk and derailing the whole thread just to sling **** at X1 and later as well as people who use it. The epitome of Stop Liking What I Don't Like.

Hey , you got SONAR Professional & FL Studio 12 . That actually sounds like a very potent set up you have there.
With those two combined you can certainly cover a lot of musical ground .
It may interest you to know that there are a few long term SONAR users here on the forum that use both programs as their main DAW's ....

FL is very popular, so hearing this doesn't surprise me one bit. :P

My comments are no slight against gol and the IL team--I started out way back in the day with FL 7. If it weren't for them, most other DAWs would still only have staff view! I'm terrible at reading music, so PRV is a lifesaver. FL just doesn't handle heavy stuff very well, at least in my experience. Of course, this is probably exacerbated by my lack of funds, and therefore, lack of a proper interface. Even a 2i2 is over $200 here, with some places approaching $400!

For what it's worth I do still use FL 12 pretty extensively, and will likely use the two in tandem once I figure out how to make more effective use of Sonar. :)

There's probably a reason for this, but it seems that Sonar could incorporate live looping into their app, no?

I think it'd be fun to have live looping. I often drag out a drum loop to what I think is longer than I'll play and then start playing and recording. I hate it when I play past the end of my drum loop (especially when this causes a system crash).

Why not have a setting that causes an infinite repeat until you hit stop?

And on that line, why not be able to mark a start point and end point live and cause that to repeat until you stop?

And how much cooler if it could snap to the timeline grid and somehow magically (without interrupting the recording or live playback, compile the adjusted audio for the loop.

I'm not trying to ask too much, but it seems like the whole framework is there for this. AudioSnap, Snap to Grid, etc etc. If TH2/TH3/Guitar Rig can have a looper, why can't Sonar?

NebRanger,

FL 7 changed the whole game for everybody ? I'm not so sure on that one . if it did for you , I'm OK w that

I considered FL 12 Studio very strongly over here .
A couple of months ago I put the most recent FL 12 demo on my Win 8 machine and to my surprise I saw that Image Line had a Beta demo FL 12 for Mac .  I downloaded the beta demo and put that on my i Mac .
(imho , the beta in OSX ran pretty darn good )

Ultimately in my case , I felt that it was important for me to upgrade to SPlat and focus more on honing in my skills
in SONAR ..
The main reason for that is I started to feel like ,
I was rapidly becoming a "Jack of all DAW's and a Master of None "  I kid you not

anyway nice talking with you ,

Kenny

@gswitz ,

Have you looked into learning how to use SONAR 's Matrix  ?

The FL7 comment was more general observation--that is, to say, that overall, the intuitiveness of FL Studio's piano roll environment is what really got me into this sort of thing "full-time". Some may harp on about how cluttered the interface is, and I'd agree, but I'll be damned if gol didn't end up making MIDI editing easy to handle. :)

Main reason I came over to the Big S side of things was a combination of things; FL's propensity to "overreport" the CPU usage of (and thus chug with) bigger libraries based on PLAY or Kontakt means FL would report 70%+ CPU usage where Task Manager would show 30% at most, and the fact that Sonar's PRV has way finer control of note lengths and grid snap (I hate using (none) snap in FL because it's really easy to mess up alignments). One thing I really miss from FL's PRV though is how copy/paste is based on scroll position rather than Now Time. I can easily copy four bars of MIDI then paste it right after itself by scrolling so the left edge of the view is near the end of the fourth bar. Can't do that as quickly in Sonar, especially considering I have yet to fully learn how to clip. :P
