My old win 7 laptop isn't quite fast enough for Sonar Pro so I got the Lenovo Erazer X510

They sold it with Win 8.1 but when it came time to update Windows I was getting failure codes from the Windows Updater along with popups to do the free Win 10 upgrade.
 
Well the upgrade fixed the updater issues so I proceeded to migrate my software and hardware over. Everything went flawlessly...until playback. I don't get any MIDI to play out of Sonar.
 
Naturally, I suspected a configuration problem. I verified my AISO card (Line6 UX2) was working correctly in and out. I checked Sonar's Preferences and see that I cant mix AISO with other card formats. I then pulled a sample MIDI file from the internet and it plays just fine in Media Player. When loaded into Sonar I see the meters move but no sound. (I should mention that I did have a VST assigned to the track). I switched the sound card format (I think it was to WDM?) and checked the appropriate check boxes in Preferences for output and again, no MIDI output.
 
I loaded the Sonar Audio Demo and it plays on both cards. I then tried the basic .mid file in Media Player and it worked. I then loaded it into Sonar and it didn't, on both cards.
 
Since I have never used the UX2 to play MIDI I'm not sure what I should be expecting. I looked quickly at Line6's documentation and it looks like everything is as it should be. So why don't I hear the MIDI tracks?

what VST do you have assigned to the track?  I think it's important to know everything about the project - what were you sending MIDI out to?  (since MIDI itself doesn't have any sounds and yes, it will show meters moving because it has data).  but without troubleshooting where the MIDI is being sent to, we don't know how to help.
 
also, this is a sonar issue, not an issue directly related to the computer itself, so I'm going to move this thread to the sonar forum where you'll get more help.

Since X3, if you open a MIDI file with SONAR and have not MIDI output assigned in SONAR preferences it will automatically insert TTS-1 for you. Another option to try.

As Beagle mentioned, your routing is important to check. If you get audio to play in SONAR and MIDI meters to move, the most likely issue is routing or MIDI buffer (can bump that up to 500ms).

The ASIO specification only allows one ASIO interface to function at a time, with the exception of a few interfaces such as the RME ones where the manufacturer has coded the ASIO driver to allow multiple units to be accessed by the driver at the same time.

When you say you "see the meters move" which meters? The MIDI track meter, the meter on the audio track the VSTi controlled by the MIDI track, the master bus meter, the output meter, any metering on the interface or the software that goes with the interface?

This is most likely a routing issue in Sonar, or maybe in the audio interface's software, but without more details it's hard to know where to start sugesting possible solutions.
