Hi to all - I just purchased a Novation LaunchKey 49 keyboard controller, and I am not getting it to communicate with SONAR Platinum. Should I return the controller, and can anyone recommend one for under $100 (new or used)? Thanks,
George.

Need more information. Did you read through the manual to see how you're suppose to use it with midi devices? I don't use automap, I just use my Impulse alone as the controller.

Novation has Sonar support inside Automap but not as InControl. As I understand, LaunchKey is not Automap compatible. It still should work fine as a MIDI keyboard/controller, using it as a Control Surface requires manual configuration (see chapters 20 and 40 in the Sonar Reference Manual and the link in my signature).

In that price range, the only known controller with dedicated Sonar support out of the box is Naktar Impact. Other (more pricey) are from Roland and Automap supporting Novation devices.

Interesting to know. I thought all their controllers used Automap. None the less, I find automap more problem than it's worth so I just don't use it.

I use the same thing. You're supposed to set it up as a standard MIDI using the ACT Learn utility but I have yet to get it to work.

Please read Sonar documentation first. "Standard MIDI" (MIDI input for music related content), "MIDI Learn" (directly in Sonar or throw Control Surface plug-in) and "ACT Learn" (map between parameters and Sonar internal control identifiers) have close to nothing common...

I don't understand why CAKE doesn't bite the bullet and create some type of HUI bridge for midi controllers.  This is the main reason that so many controllers don't have a direct interface with SONAR.

Sonar says that HUI is dead but with so many hardware developers still releasing devices to the HUI standard, one has to question this decision.

There will be some... But I do not think you will be happy then. At least not more than owners of "MCU compatible" devices. Launchkey has close to nothing common with the original HUI. So you can guess how "good" it can imitate it. HUI support by many controllers is just a advertisement trick with the meaning "Our device can be used with PT". Either you can do something useful with that is different questions.
