I recently imported a cassette tape recording, recorded as .wav file into Sonar X3.
The track shows as two lines of waveform.
I would like to be able remix if possible.
Does anyone know if it's possible to edit these tracks?
 
 

Hi Marcus,
If you're talking about remixing as in "I want to change the drums to be louder" or "that guitar has to go", then no.
You're more than likely dealing with a two track that was recorded in.
 
Now, if your remix means doing something like a "mixtape", then yes.  Sonar can help you with that.
You can cut and splice and rearrange (use the split tool and a couple of extra tracks).
There are a number of really good people here so they will help you with details.

A mixtape would be mixing the song that you recorded in, into other songs. Like a continuous mix from one song to another.
 
Another thing you could consider, is taking the current song that you recorded and adding to it. Although, it would be hard to mess with the mix of the original recording, you can add or subtract to the whole. Think of a painting that has completely dried. You can add more colors to it, or chop it up and re-arrange it, but the main painting will still be there, unless you completely cover it with another color (sound).

Given slumbermachine's avatar, I'm guessing he has some experience with cassettes.

You may be able to do some sort of remixing by using a multiband compressor. Roland had a product, I think it began with the letter R that would give you an opportunity to sort of change levels on different parts of the recording.

While there are a few programs out there that claim they can use ARA style technology to remove things and remix, they all leave artifacts and do a so so job at best.

I explained it to a client like this once:

"I will take that guitar out of that mix for you the day you can bake me a cake and then remove the egg from it once you are finished."

That said, Melodyne type software is moving that direction but it is not there yet.
