  • For those who do screen recording: Do your plugin GUIs get recorded to the vids?

I discovered something yesterday that's a little disappointing. When using Mirillis Action! in "Desktop" mode to make a screencap video if I insert a plugin or synth (like Guitar Rig or Addictive drums) and leave it floating (undocked) the GUI for the plug does not get captured on the vid. It's totally invisible and instead Sonar (which is behind the plugin) is shown instead.

If I put the plugins into the MultiDock they become visible and remain visible if I float the dock so it's not a huge thing. I can still demo the plugs for the vids. Also if I open the plugins as standalone applications they are visible so it's not the plugs themselves.

So I'm wondering if this is a known thing when recording screencap vids or Sonar or if it's a Mirillis Action! issue (Action! does other things like hide my Start menu button which is weird). Or maybe it's my vid card?

Like maybe because plugins are programs within a program something weird happens.

I know I've seen video demos where the floating GUIs are visible though so maybe there's a trick.

Just looking to troubleshoot this and maybe I'll send a report to Mirillis to see if they know something or maybe get them to patch it.

The other odd thing is my Sonar meters (which are the usual alien green) are grey in the vids. You can still see them and if I jiggle the screen real fast with the Track View scrollbar they'll flash green for a second but I would like to understand what might cause that. Like maybe screen refresh rates or something?

Other than that Action! is working out pretty well.

No rush. Thanks in advance.

Some screen cap programs have builtin scripting to prevent capture of videos (copyrighted material). I am not sure if this is at play or not for you, nor if the feature makes the "video" transparent.

Is it possible that you're capturing the Sonar window instead of the entire screen?

Hi, guys. Thanks for responding...

Action! seems to not have that function because it actually goes into detail in the manual (and has sepcific features to enable) of how to record video players. I've actually tried it and it works. Not sure how useful that is when you can usually just download most stuff anyway (not that I do) but the function is there.

God call though and perhaps worth looking into because maybe some kind of popup blocker function? Like it's designed to block out chat windows during gameplay. I'll look into that. Cheers.

Okay, so that eliminates Sonar itself. Maybe just some conflict with Sonar and Action! or a setting somewhere I have yet to discover.

Thanks.

I've got Action! in Desktop mode which is SUPPOSED to snag everything onscreen. There are other modes, one of which does what you are referring to. That wraps the recording around whatever window you point it to (or more accurately you select an areas and it focuses on that and you can use a "Magnet" function to wrap around active windows).

I am able to record multiple programs at the same time so I don' think it's that. For example if I have Sonar open, a Control Panel open, Mirillis Action player/GUI open and whatever else I can switch around and have windows overlaid on top of each other and it capture everything.

Definitely a good point though.

Cheers.

Edit: and based on mixmkr's comment this is looking like something to do with Action! and how it decides what to capture. I'll dig a little more and maybe contact their support team to see if maybe it's something they can test/fix/advise me on.

Thanks for the confirmation. As a side note I was looking at Hypercam but based on a slew of online reports the developers have abandoned the product and somehow it's been infested with creepy critters in recent release distros.

If it were just my general use system I would care about testing it out but on my DAW I'm ultra paranoid.

I'm also hooked on Action! now for the low resource consumption aspect.

I really am getting the impression this is some kind of unintended/unforeseen issue with Action! so I'll report it.

I just looked around the settings to see if their is some kind of Popup block function but could not find anything that seemed relevant.

It could also be a problem with my admittedly ghetto arse vid card. It's just a cheapo Gigabyte card (210GE or something like that) I only dropped about 20 bucks on. It's been nagging me to update lately but I think that's just for a Win10 driver.

All of the data points provided here are extremely useful. I'm definitely getting a better idea of what might be up (through the process of elimination).

Thanks muchly. You guys rule.

Hi Beepster, I use Camtasia and it works fine. It's expensive but if making videos is something that you are regularly gonna do it might be worth it.

Hi Beepster, long time no speak,  but I use Camtasia for demos/promotions/tutorials with no issues. The editing/capture options are second to none albeit at a price.

Prior to that I've used camstudio with similar capture results.

@sausy and Karl (and big ole howdy to Karl... hope you been stayin' safe on the track and had a good season)...

Camtasia is most definitely on the Beepster "DO WANT" list. It is pretty cost prohibitive at this point though but it does seem like it would make my life a lot more streamlined in this regard (editing right in the capture program would be nice as well as all the fancy post-prod goodies designed for tuts).

I'm guessing it also has a pretty low system footprint as well while making the vids (or my fave tut makers using it just have much nicer systems than I do).

Again... good data point to have because I can point that out to Mirillis support. I know it's supposed to be mostly for gaming but I'm sure they wouldn't mind picking up some DAW hound business. Of course being able to show off plugs and ALL behavior (like the plug GUIs opening/floating) is kind of a big deal for PROPER tuts.

I'm mostly hackin' it at this point so I can just explain why I have to dock the plugs in the vids but it is a little lame.

Thanks for popping in, guys.

Cheers.
