I have not read thru every post in the thread....but for those of us who make our living with software, I don't think $150 a year is that much of a cost for the benefits we get.  Plus....it's totally tax deductible :) .  OTOH...if music is a hobby...I can see where someone would rather buy the software...pay for it once...and just use it and not worry about updates if the software works for them.

Tax deductible can you explain more on this please?

Then hobbyists who are watching budgets super-carefully shouldn't buy more costly software that's designed for hardcore professional users who make a living off of it. They can buy SONAR Artist, or Music Creator, get a bundled version of an LE program with an interface, or whatever rather than complain about paying the price for pro-level equipment. Similarly, this is why Fender makes Squier guitars, Gibson makes Epiphone, and Porsche makes Volkswagens.

Though with regards to hobbies, $150-200/year is peanuts for most of them. I mean think about a simple hobby for most people: watching TV. What's a cable subscription run you these days? Usually $50/month minimum, and it can easy hit $100/month or more with HD+expanded channels. That's $600-1200/year that most people pay without a thought. How about sports? Tickets to football at the university I work at (not pro here) start at $150/season for economy obstructed seating, go to $1200 for A section seats and up to $31,000 for priority premium skybox. Or perhaps you wish to take in a live show, The Royal Philharmonic Symphony is coming to town. Not really something all that popular with most people, so cheaper than some other shows. $45 minimum for the far seats, $100 for many seats for about a 2 hour show.

I'm a pure hobbyist, and yet I get Platinum because I like it, and it really isn't that much money for a hobby. You can easy spend more than a couple hundred dollars on most hobbies. Now that isn't to say everyone needs to get Platinum, of course not, everyone's financial situation and needs are different. But let's not pretend like the asking price is problematic, even just for a hobby.

I will continue to post in threads about what I think is a good post in my own way. However it never occurred to me that there would be any objection to marking a post as best answer.  I wont do it again. I went back and rescinded the best answer and made it helpful.

What a good example of graceful good character. Well done John. Everyone was respectful in a disagreement and no one got the "back up". The internets have really improved from the old HCGF days of the late 90s, lol.
Seriously, this is a good example of how adults should act. What a class act this place is.

Good thread!

Great point about paying for cable

Who has time to watch tv these days ?  I cancelled my cable tv years ago since I only used it to watch the SuperBowl and get info on the latest natural or man-made disaster.  I do have cable for the Internet, but without that I couldn't even run Sonar.

I also dumped cable years ago, I spend all my time playing computer. However a great many people still have it, even if they don't watch much, and drop a few hundred to a grand a year doing so. Not a problem and I'd never tell someone they are wrong for it, but it can put hobby costs in perspective.

I used it a lot when I'd play WoW. Someone would whine because their video card was overwhelmed and I'd suggest a $150ish replacement that would fix the issue. Invariably they complained that the cost was excessive, so I'd turn to cable TV. Ask them how much they played the game, if they had cable, and then do cost comparisons. IT was always surprising to me how many people would play WoW 10+ hours a week and yet consider $150 an "unreasonable" amount to spend on it, yet have a pretty expensive cable TV subscription.
