Yea, that's what I'm meaning kind of. This first year I've justified my subscription fee as just buying Sonar in monthly installments. I don't know if I want to continue paying a fairly high monthly fee (which works out to over $300) just for monthly updates.

It's not the same though because before January, I didn't have Sonar.

Well Right. But any monthly updates after that you won't own them for another 12 months IFAIK.

Perhaps something(s) nice for the first year anniversary. Then in soon time will be End January-Begin February, but at least the March update should be significant.
In my opinion, don't do anything too BIG which can cause more issues than its worth with the monthlies.

The big surprise for me was there was no drum maps UI replacement ;)

(OK that's twice in one month, toning it down..)

Actually they have a complete new drum maps UI debugged and ready to go, but there's an internal bet going on within Cakewalk about how many more times you'll bring it up. The faction that believes you're going to mention it another 300 times within 12 calendar months is stalling on the release in the hopes that you'll keep mentioning it at every opportunity, so they'll win the bet. The other faction believes you're going to give up, and therefore will stop mentioning it and any additional mentions will fall short of 300. So they're also stalling in the hopes you give up, and they can win the bet. Of course, the bad news for you is that in either case, it's in their best interests to stall.

The prize is a mondo sushi dinner with all the sake the winners can drink, along with a free iLoud from IK Multimedia and a year's worth of hamster chow for the Grays who did the programming. So this is not something they take lightly.

I thought it was $14.99 a month for a Platinum update, which works out to a little less than $180 for the year. Or you can just pay $149 up front.

As an anecdotal addition to the thread, my Bible software Logos(been with them since DOS!), has just "switched" to a thing called Logos Now, which gives access to many resources for either $8.99/mo or $89.99/yr. 1 month free for the monthly and 2 months free for the annual.
It is the future.......And it helps keep steady jobs.

back to your regular programming. pun intended

I think there are a number of things about the membership programme pricing that have been under-explained.

The actual way it works is more than fair. Once you've bought in, you're on update pricing. So the first year for a new user may well cost quite a bit, but once you're into renewals, it is indeed $15 a month.

Also, it's not the case that you have to commit in 12 month blocks. You have to commit to an initial 12 month block, and then after that, it rolls over month by month.

This information is available, but I think somewhat unclear. Certainly, the forums suggest it's not that widely understood. I think Cakewalk would do themselves a favour if they found a less complicated way to both structure and present it.

Looking further ahead, I think it obvious and predictable that the idea of year one buy-in being more expensive will go the way of the dodo within the next couple of years. There's no good reason to have a barrier to entry like that.

I think it is patently unfair that the rest of us are punished for the Dr's persistence.  Maybe CW could release the new Drum Map UI now to everyone but him.  Then he could fume while he reads our posts about how great it is
On the other hand maybe we should keep the present Drum map UI; It makes me a bit nostalgic for the good old days when I used to write machine code on an Ohio Scientific 6502 I built from a kit.  Those were the days!!

Seriously, though, I suspect some of us will weigh the option of resubscribing to the Sonar program against using the money to buy a copy of another program or VST (e.g. in my case I'm considering Studio One ).  The decision will probably be based upon the information the OP has requested above as well as past experience.  The CW staff seem to be getting better at accurately predicting the arrival date of the new features and it is likely that they have a Gantt chart with the upcoming improvements (other than the Eureka moments which haven't happened yet).  It would be great to have a peek.

Cheers.
