So assuming you pay 4 months, then pay for a full year up front, then cancel your monthly membership, this will permanently unlock the latest version you own during your entire membership.

After "full year up front" there is nothing to cancel.

If I start monthly subscription in January and someone else in June and we both cancel out subscriptions in July next year, according to the answer, I can not keep June version but other member, which has started to pay half a year later, can. That make no sense.

+1 Cakewalk should clarify all that.

The startup of membership was advertised with "you pay for what we have already developed during the last year (list) plus everything which comes in our mind during this year (partial list)". And I think everyone agree that was delivered and justified. But for the next year, the first statement is no longer valid (users have already paid for it). Leaving just "everything which comes during this year", and without any attached list that does not sound attracting.

Sort of confused since initially all the hub bub basically said the last version "owned" was the last update so long as it spanned or exceeded 12 months... Now it says if someone pays 16 months, they only get to month 12?

It seems that it is said only in support's reply to me, so it could be mistake. But it is weird that it is not clarified.

The Rolling Updates page usually previews what will be in the next month's release. The last two months (Ipswitch and JP) have been major feature releases. I expect we won't see another major feature for at least a couple of months, as these things do take time to develop. Hence nothing posted under Rolling Updates since it could be a while before we actually see "the next big thing", which BTW I hope and expect to be an Arrange feature as much discussed here and in Feedback Loop.

I'm thinking around the 1st year renewal time....what is it....Jan 22nd 2016 (or so)...there will be a huge frenzy again for those that complain about the subscription, don't understand Cake's policy, and a flurry of threads that duplicated last years.
It seems this thread has started to warm things up in that arena.
Honestly, I'm ready to pay the next [upcoming] year and forget about payments for 12 months and continue  to be very impressed with all the new updates that rolled out monthly.  The value of the updates has well exceeded $149 imo, and I see that trend incredibly likely to continue.  Lots of good suggestions for new features and I believe Cake has their ears open.

Same here :) One thing I noticed looking at Cakewalk at steam is that they aren't doing the monthly payments over there anymore.

It was not and it is not. But I think the point of this thread is preventing the membership is "converted" into it. If there will be no "this year you will get at least..." list before next up front payment, it will be "magazine subscription" (yes, not modern software "subscription") since that means "pay up front and get whatever we write next year"

I thought it was $14.99 a month for a Platinum update, which works out to a little less than $180 for the year. Or you can just pay $149 up front.

well if that's true, then I'd definitely have no problem continuing. I don't know where I got $30 from? Is that what it currently is for people who are updating?

I didn't mean to sound like that at all, I'm fine with there being a monthly payment option, I'm not complaining. Just trying to decide if it's still something I want to be doing now that I'll own Sonar.
