  • MIDI to Audio question using a Ketron SD2?

Quick view of my setup: Using Sonar X1, I port MIDI from an existing track out to a Ketron SD-2 orchestral wizard (hardware) which converts MIDI to L/R audio. The Ketron's audio is wired into an M-Audio Fast Track Ultra L/R input #5, and the mix is output to my amp via FT's output channel 1.

When I wish to record the audio from the Ketron, I create a new audio track for each MIDI track, direct the MIDI output to the input of the audio track, and then solo and record each track independently. This works but can be quite labor intensive with a lot of tracks.

Is there an easier way? If you have suggestions for recording MIDI processed from an external hardware device, like the Ketron, please reply. I appreciate your help and advice.

PS: Just to be clear: Yes, I know I can use soft synths, but that's not what I'm asking.

Thanks and best wishes,

MIDI tracks outputing to whichever MIDI port(s) sends MIDI to the synth and audio tracks to record the audio from the synth via the audio interface is about it with hardware synths.

Thank you for your reply. I take some comfort in knowing I'm using the best method.

That Ketron is capable of receiving on multiple midi channels at once, thereby playing multiple parts at once out of its stereo outs. Naturally, that means you would be mixing in the SD2 onto a single audio track in Sonar. So not much to do in Sonar after that, but the recording part would be less labor intensive.

@bvideo: Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I've done that, but I frequently prefer to mix the individual audio tracks, and so record each audio separately prior to final mix.
