I would have found the test more beneficial if it would have compared the Kingston update to the Current Platinum. I have not used X3 for ages so I'm not really sure why the time was spent on the testing of apples to oranges.

Maybe to convince current users of X3 to upgrade. Users of the new SONAR will be able to judge for themselves soon.

I felt it would be a useful metric for people to see how far SONAR has advanced since the prior version, since we have been working on optimizations all along, more so than with any prior version.
Its easy enough to test against the last release when you get it. The numbers for the tests I did would be fairly close since even JP didn't have those updates.

For the release after Kingston there are even more demonstrable optimizations coming. More project load improvements as well as other UI speedups.

Thanks for the update Noel! Sounds like things are really progressing. Looking forward to the update and the future.

Any plans for more Console UI improvements such as making the Activated Fx in the Fx bin show up a different color than Bypassed Fx? Currently it is hard for me to distinguish the difference just by looking as they all appear to be Grey unless you click on one, then is highlights to a light blue color.

Kind regards,
Rick

Hi Noel,
It's been a while since the last 'Cakewalk' recommendation on system set-up and your last posts on upgrading to win10 a couple of months ago were very positive. I'm still testing back & forth. I find that win8.1 gives me lower dpc spikes than win10 and the overall user experience seems pretty similar.
The blog entry states the test was done on a win 8.1 system.
I find it very interesting to read through the numerous threads all over the net on optimizations, patches, tweaks etc. and I was wondering how your 8.1 system is set-up. Specifically I'm interested in which windows updates (if any..) are installed on the testing rig? Do you let win auto-aupdate?

Cheers

Horribly :-P The system I did the test on was my work PC which is more optimized for development than music lol.
The tests in question are not dependent on any system optimizations since they purely reflect the behavior of the code in SONAR. You will see those improvements on pretty much any PC.

My DAW at home has the same processor but its a different machine and motherboard. I bought it from Jim at StudioCat. He did all the setup for it so I didn't mess with it too much other than upgrading it to Windows 10.
I always let my system update. Its pretty rare that there is a mess up. I did have trouble with the big Win10 update however - it messed up one of my machines ability to resume from suspend. Didn't affect my DAW however.

The PC in your sig looks fine as well. I tend to go for the highest multicore I can afford so I got the 5960X since I do some video stuff as well. The 4970K is also a pretty smoking processor.

Thanks for posting this Andrew, and thanks also to Noel for doing these tests. It does help me understand how going from Win7 with X3 to Win10 with Platinum is actually allowing my 32bit install to run a little quicker.
Now if you could just get Sonar and all the associated VST's to run on a memory footprint of under 200K, I'd be able to put all the effects I want on my 60 track projects.

Excellent. Thanks for the feedback.

Great improvement, this. I have a BFD track template that loads the plugin, routed out to eight tracks, and that's gone from adding the tracks visibly one-by-one to just popping up immediately. It's a small thing, but I've found more flow-enhancing than I expected to.

^ Yep, exactly what I'm seeing. My hardware is pretty ancient too, so to get this kind of performance boost has really given everything a kick along for me!
