Hmm, that's interesting, Bit.  I'm going to have to try that, thanks for sharing.  I don't use reverb for much of anything at all.  Never really liked it.  Ha ha.

I had an actual 808 back in the day. I hated it. "That doesn't sound anything like a bass drum", I thought. But it was affordable and fun to program. Nevertheless, it went into the junk drawer the moment I figured out how to do a believable kick on a synthesizer. And that, in turn, quickly fell by the wayside when I got an Alesis with real sampled drums inside.
 
At no point along that journey did I ever once feel the least bit nostalgic for that boring gated sinewave. So I am mystified as to why young producers of today, with the mindblowing cornucopia of sound available to them, would want to use that tired old hack.

The TR303 was the one that got me. I had one and sold it for a pittance as I got MIDI and better synths. It wasn't long before it was the new fad and fetching silly money, I wish I had held on to it a bit longer and made a killing. I seems the bubble still hasn't completely burst.
 
I still have an Alesis MIDIverb in the loft, that had some gated programs that did make my TR505 sound a bit more fashionable. Maybe I should get the pair of them down and see if they still work.

...things are coming back around again to where pop music is embracing synths as a genuine instrument that isn't trying to be something else. I think it's awesome. We have a lot to be grateful for in this revival.

So now we have other related things like gated reverb making a comeback because they were a huge part of that retro sound. I'm not going to complain about it, it is what it is.

I also like that synths are coming back.  I don't mind the return of gated reverb (yet).  What I don't like is the return of mickey mouse sampling.

Yeah, it's because everyone is getting into Retro-Futurism, that basically is reviving the 80's scifi dystopia culture.  The fascination is with how we in the 80's viewed the future of 2020 or even further.  But that means all of the music is coming back and also being busted into 100 sub-genres.  CyberPunk, VaporWave, SynthWave... I can't even think of any more than that.  I mean... I can't lie.  I like it, having grown up in the 80's.

Few things turned out the way we'd imagined they would 30-40 years ago, did they?
 
My own prognostication record is mixed:
- leg warmers: gone for good, as I predicted
- Disco: still popular, contrary to my most optimistic hopes in 1984
- Karma Chameleon: still stuck in my head after all these years, just as I'd feared
- Devo: relegated to ironic trope status, proving there is at least some justice
 

Is the 808 is the reason the reason for the neighbor kid's car trunk lid rattling so much when he drives by?
 
Hey bit - on the notion of envelopes - did you ever try the trick loading up a long impulse into a convolution verb and dinking with the envelope there? It might be a new twist on an old hack. I think some convo verbs allow for dynamics to alter the envelopes (not recalling which ones ATM)

The good old Perfect Space is perfect for tweaking IRs. Plus there are gobs of off-the-wall IRs out there, e.g. unusual spaces such as the inside of a wastebasket. And, of course, there are gated reverb IRs. I'd be surprised if someone hasn't sampled the classic SSL talkback gate that started the whole gated-reverb phenomenon in the first place.

The 808 had some real unique electronic circuits for its time.
The clap sound is very clever. Respects to the designer that thought that one up.
 
The cymbals were also clever. 6 oscillators around a chip actually intended for
digital use, at a time where all other drum boxes were using white noise.
 
The bass drum had two oscillators, not one (well, resonant filters, really)
But the one intended to simulate the beater never really cut through in practice.
 
The gated snare was a happy accident.
But the 808 was conceived from the ground up.
