Saw the Fishman demo'd at Gearfest last year. Really amazing, and seemed to work very well. But the Jam Origin software looks cool too. I can see advantages to each.

Demoed both version 1 and 2 of Midi Guitar. Version 1 has way more latency so don't bother. I see why I didn't bother with it the first time. At least my GR 50 has very little latency when playing the sound module.

The supplied sounds are useless so don't rate it on that. But it was dead simple to play a VST in Sonar.  I simply patched a short midi cable from my interfaces midi output to the input. Set the midi guitar to your interface midi out, and use your interface midi in as the input for the soft synth.

And yes, because it does not use a hex pick up, it has no way of detecting strings. So I noticed a weirdness from that when compared to my GR-50.
I'm not that impressed that I'm willing to spend $100 even though it works , it has a "shareware" feel to the software. The demo mode is very annoying as it times out while your focused in Sonar about every 2 minutes. And it seems the pitch bending is disabled. So you sort of have to spend the money to really give it a workout.
I see where I still will want a hardware midi guitar to retain what I'm used to

That's kinda' where I'm leaning.  I like hardware.  Some times  :)

I really wish the Roland stuff had generic MIDI capability.  I would definitely go with one of those Strats that come with the Roland hex pickup if I wasn't forced to use Roland's synths ... at $500 to $800+ a pop.

If I go Fishman and it works as well as the youtube vids would have you believe, I could even see picking up another guitar with great feel and lousy pickups to be a permanent MIDI controller.

We'll see ...

I have to admit I haven't tried the newest version of Jam Origin, but version 1 does NOT deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as just about any of the hardware I've used, starting with a Roland GR-30, then a GR-33, and now the Axon. I know there is a big difference in price, but even then, $100 for an almost useless toy with high latency and glitchy detection vs. a system that, although not perfect, actually works pretty well.  Just no comparison in results.  Sure, if you want to dabble a bit and can put up with latency and a few headaches, MIDI Guitar might be a fun toy.

Note: even with the hardware, you will need fairly clean technique and you pretty much need to treat it like a different instrument, IMO.  Don't expect everything you play on guitar to translate perfectly to a synth, and some sounds will work better than others in that respect.  All-in-all I'm firmly in the hardware camp if you want to get the best results, and pretty satisfied with my Axon.  I've heard enough really nice things about the Fishman that it intrigues me as well, but what I have is paid for... so I'm not really GAS-sing so much for it at this point.

OK ... I just spent some time with the GT-001 Guitar-MIDI feature and Rap Pro.  As you said, Genghis, some patches sound better suited than others.  BUT ... this is on the verge of being useful!  Enough for me to dabble with the idea long enough to see if my guitar-MIDI GAS waxes or wanes.

I need to see if I can do something useful it as is ... I guess I should try different guitars as well.

Thanks everybody for the input so far.  Keep it coming.

I have Fishman TriplePlay and I love it. I have it on a 10 year old Fender Korean Scorpion Showmaster. It's black so you can't even see the TriplePlay. It takes awhile to get set up but if you just keep at it, it is worth it when you get there. I would not install any of the software that comes with it other than the core program. Use the core program to get your settings right, check it in your midi instruments list and then use it just like any midi keyboard. I very seldom open the program just to play a synth. It tracks just as fast as I can play. Sometimes it doesn't make a sound but then I realize I'm trying to play a flute on the low strings. Bends and vibrato can add and "artifact"ish sound but not always. You learn when you can and when you can't. You do learn how to play the guitar a bit different than you did, but that can be a good thing even for your regular guitar playing. You won't get away with "fat finger" string mutes as much as you do on guitar but that's one of those good things it forces to do. Do I like it: yes I love it. Would I want to be without it: no. Is it worth the price, for me? yes. Between my right handed keyboard play, Toontrack EZ Keys and the Fishman, I can get any keyboard part I need. Not just a blah serviceable part. but something that adds to the song. And horns and strings and synths are a blast to play. Putting it on a guitar I already had was not a problem either. Remember you can use the synth part and still have the guitar plugged in so you can record both parts and blend them. Add some delay to the guitar part and pull it up until you get what you want. Lots of fun! Biggest surprises? How good piano sounds using the TriplePlay. And maybe my fav, using an acoustic guitar patch with the Fishman. You can get acoustic guitar that sounds better that a piezo pickup and much faster than miking. They can be good enough to use in your mix but way good enough for a scratch track or a "how would an acoustic guitar sound here?" track. I tried the You Rock deal and it was better than I thought it would be at $250.00 I went with the Fishman.

Thanks BD.  It took me 10 secs to realize that all of style-induced pinch harmonics would need to be cleaned up.  In another 10-15 minutes I had convincing (to me) sax, trumpet, piano, organ and harmonica parts.  All in mono polyphany :-(  Developing cleaner playing technique will obviously be a plus no matter what.

Definite misfires here and there.  I'm going to try adding some guitar-driven synth parts to some actual mixes next.  If that pans out, a Tripleplay will be on my short list.

Anybody want to buy a Peavey AT200 with all the goodies plus locking machines? - LOL

LOL, I play slide a lot and I never even thought of it! I will look into that when I get time. My thought is you may be able to get a no attack swell like sound with it. This is interesting, thanx BobF.

I asked because I'm sitting here playing the the GT's guitar2midi and it has a setting for bend range, which goes all the way to 24 semis.  Sooooo ... ?
