  • Run As Administrator?

Hello Everyone,

I seem to remember Sonar X1 - X3 (and possibly earlier versions) needed Sonar to be "Run As Administrator" - infact it installed as such by default (I remember seeing the yellow icon over the Sonar icon).  I just installed Sonar Platinum today on a new PC and realize it is not set to Run As Administrator.

Is this something that should be set or does it not matter anymore?

Thank You!

It seems wise to run the installer as Administrator if you are installing outside of the CCC.  But it does not appear to be necessary just to run the program.

Hope this helps, looks like the answer is yes (run as administrator).
Installing SONAR
In order to install SONAR, you must log in to your Windows system as a user who has administrative privileges. Once installed, the program can also be used by users who do not have administrative privileges.

Cool thanks - I installed silently with the CCC, so no option to run as administrator.  I am the PC administrator, but I still seem to remember a caveat back in the day where you HAD to run Sonar "As An Administrator" even if you WERE one, I dont recall why.

There was a need to run as administrator to authorise certain plugs and instruments such as Dim Pro, Rapture, and some of the PC modules that were purchased separately.  Dim Pro still needs that, to get round it run dim pro standalone as administrator to authorise first time same with Rapture.

Yes, I discovered the hard way that Sonar doesn't run as admin., resulting in being unable to save the project.
As you know, to run as admin. by default, right click on the sonar icon, then properties, advanced, and you can tick a box to set admin. as default.

Bit strange that you could not save the project Portsham as projects are set by default to save to a non protected area of the disk, for most installs this defaults to C:\Cakewalk Projects.  Which can of course be changed to another location within Preferences > File Locations.

SONAR does not need to run as administration. There are some older 32bit plug-ins however which do or at least need their registry entries permissions modified to be accessible by regular users. The last plugin bundled with SONAR which had this requirement was Pentagon and it was dropped from the new SONAR. Running as administrator is often the solution to getting 32bit IK Multimedia plug-ins working.

Sonar does not need to be run as administrator, but I use Sound Forge and it has to be run as adminitrator when run from Sonar, so I have Sonar set to run as admin.

I just tried running SoundForge 10 from within 64bit SONAR on Win10. My user account is setup as an administrator. Neither program is setup to run administrator, however; they both seem to work together OK.
