I would turn off any other MIDI devices that could be conflicting to see what happens.

I would remove any Roland APRO software including drivers.
Then reboot and install drivers (version 1.0.2) and firmware (what they call program update 1.1.5 assuming you are not running it) from here:
http://www.roland.com/support/article/?q=downloads&p=A-800PRO

Then then reconfigure MIDI devices and ACT in Sonar. Also make sure your Windows update is fully up to date (including optional updates related to performance). Run scandisk and defrag. Maybe check your USB cable as well.

Cheers....

Hello Alex
I did all that, but I still have this problem when I select just the profile "A-PRO". I tried with my old PRC300 and I do not have this problem with PCR profile.

I have yet to install my A 800-Pro...I can't wait?

All new PC.
Win7.
X3e.

I guess I need to go to Roland's site and get the latest and greatest and then follow instructions from this thread, so that I do NOT load "ACT".

Fingers crossed...

This whole A-Pro thing is still confusing to me.  All I know is that when I first got the keyboard, I set it up according to every instruction I could find, and while I've been able to control Sonar with it (faders, pan pots etc) there has never been a connection with ACT.  No lighting up of the ACT button on the keyboard.  Also, as said before, I usually need to go back into Sonar's preferences and set Apro up again as my control surface because that info is dumped.

Basically - it works, even though nothing with ACT actually works.  Hmm.

I need to answer your questions Jlien X:

Jlien X...Are the A-Pro and PC connected via a USB cable?

Yes.

Jlien X...Do you also connect other devices via a MIDI cable?

No, I haven't used MIDI cables for quite a few years now.

Jlien X...launch A-PRO Editor and try to have the editor receive one of control maps from the A-Pro hardware and then transmit the map back to the A-Pro hardware. If the LCD says "Receiving..." then your A-Pro has no problem receiving a control map from the PC, right?

Right - That works.  It's only in Sonar that exchanging maps doesn't work.

Jlien X...Is your Preferences > MIDI > Control Surfaces page set up properly as shown in the document in Alex's post?

Yes, seems to be.  That's a really simple setting window to work with.  That's the one I usually have to diddle with every time I launch Sonar.

Oh well.  I've had this keyboard several years now - It's always been like the above, just 1/2 working, but I'm not too bothered.  It's doing what I need.

Well mine works fine but if I turn it off and then start Sonar I do lose the controller settings next time I'm using the keyboard, so I have to set it up again which takes a minute. Pain in the ass I guess it's a Sonar bug but I've never bothered to log it.

The only software you should need is X3E, and latest firmware (program) and drivers from Roland.

Hello All,
I find the problem. If you used "A-PRO Series Control Surface Plug-in for SONAR" 1.0 or 1.0.1 (from Cakewalk), when you start Sonar (Xx or Platinum) you have latency due to this plugin. If I do not use the ACT plugin, SONAR starts normally. Please, Cakewalk and Roland, you can correct this problem?

I guess they will need more precise information about the kind of latency. Do you mean Sonar starts slower? And how slower?  The plug-in communicates with the device at that stage, so some delay is expected. If it is really significant, the problem can be at other place (USB driver,  Windows MIDI system, your controller, etc.).

Note that A-PRO plug-in is not open source and Cakewalk has no relation to Roland. So the community can not help with plug-in modification. In case you are convinced the problem really comes from the plug-in, submit bug report to Cakewalk and Roland.

As Splat stated (what a fine chap he isn't)... you don't install it:
