  • Very Basic Midi Groove Clip Question

I've used Sonar for many years and was a member here for many years as well and am just now re-learning Sonar Platinum. I've searched the web for 2 days trying to find the answer to this question.

In previous versions creating a midi clip and hitting cntrl "L" would create a groove clip, change its look with beveled corners and it could be dragged by its very definitive beveled edges out for as many measures as needed. It seems like now clicking cnrtl 'L' nothing really happens to the clip and it can be dragged out for an indefinite length ignoring the length of the original groove clip.

Was there a fundamental change in Grove clip behavior I missed? Or is there a setting I need to set to activate groove clips the old fashioned way?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT; Forgot to mention I first noticed with step sequencer clips created with Session Drummer but ti seems to behave the same with any kind of MIDI clip.

Possibly you have custom colors that are not showing the bevels clearly against the track pane background...? Or the opposite... I have custom colors that show them clearly, and the default dark clips on a dark background don't. I do seem to recall now that this was a problem for me with the default scheme.

Thanks brundle, I'll check when I get back to my computer tonight. From your answer I'm assuming there's been no changes that can be remembered. I must have a setting messed up as even the clip isn't snapping as I remember (poorly me thinks).

BTW I posted as 'HumbleNoise' for many years, many years ago. Nice to see a familiar face (avatar).

Ah, HumbleNoise, I definitely remember that username. Good to see you around again as well.

It's always been possible to roll out a groove clip to any intermediate length, depending on snap settings. If snap isn't enabled or is enabled at a low duration value and/or with a low magnetic strength, the boundary may not snap clearly to the end of the groove. Setting snap duration to Measure, and "Extreme" magnetic strength will make it more obvious when you hit the repeat point even if the colors are obscuring the beveled corners.

I often end up with groove clips that have only a partial repeat at the end (or at the beginning if I roll the start point earlier). Related to this, I like to make groove clips for drum parts have different/odd lengths so that the interplay of repeating patterns in different parts is always evolving throughout an otherwise repetitive groove.

Thanks again brundle, I'm confident I'll get it figured out with your help. I'll post tonight with results.

OK I just set up a track template from scratch and it all seems to be working as it should, or at least how my dim memory thinks it should. Maybe just some computer magic. Thanks for the reply brundle, hope to 'see' you all a little more in the future.
