When I first read this thread I misinterpreted it (assumed "electronic" meant DAW).

When actually did "electronic music" come to mean loop-based 'dance' music.

I suppose when marketing people wanted to come up with a label

I've always thought of electronic music as more like Morton Subotnick, Bernie Krause, Pauline Oliveros, etc. But hey, it's all music so screw the labeling. I can't come up with a label for the music I make, so I don't expect anyone else to have to label the music they make.

Yeah, that "epiphany" threw me for a (2-bar) loop.

Electronic music or electronica I take to mean any music which is primarily sequenced, whether that be synths or samplers. The term EDM doesn't cover it all - not all electronic music is for dancing to. There are many electronic producers out there making stuff with synths and samplers which probably has more in common with Frank Zappa than EDM.
